Brennan scores twice for MOC women

MOUNT OLIVE -- Good things come to those who wait.

At least that was the case for the Mount Olive women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon. After having some early scoring opportunities go by the wayside, the Trojans got all the offense they needed before halftime in a 2-0 Conference Carolinas victory over Anderson University at Amon Field.

Mount Olive put pressure on Anderson from the outset, but was unable to convert on several early corner kicks.

Lyndsay Brennan fed a ball through the Anderson defense to Alyecia Higgins, who raced to the ball and beat keeper Calle McCallister in the 19th minute for a 1-0 lead.

"We've had some really frustrating times in the last couple of days, " Mount Olive coach Matt Hisler said. "To get a goal early, was like lifting an 800-pound monkey off our back."

The Trojans appeared to take a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute when Brennan connnected on a goal from the far post. The goal was later waived off when it was ruled the ball had rolled out of bounds before Brennan scored.

Brennan eventually got the goal that had eluded her earlier, when Gina Dos Santos' crossing pass found her in the 41st minute. Brennan stuck home the pass for a 2-0 lead. Mount Olive finished with a 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.

"We played some great balls through," Hisler said. "The girls are working hard and they're stringing six, seven, eight passes together. If we can do that teams are going to get nervous."

Mount Olive's defense was smothering all afternoon. The Trojans didn't allow a shot in the second half and finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots. Mount Olive keeper Ali O'Steen had to make just three saves, as Anderson suffered its first conference loss in four outings this season.

"We did a great job of communicating in the back and we played one our best games of the season," Hisler said.

The host Trojans (3-6-1 overall, 2-1-1 CC) won for just the second time in their last six games, and will host Pfeiffer at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
