JACKSONVILLE -- Senior outside hitter Jordei Osby recorded a career-high 22 kills to help Eastern Wayne claim a 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-15, 15-11 win over Jacksonville White Oak on Wednesday.

Osby added six blocks and five digs as the Warriors remained unbeaten in 13 outings. They continue play today at home against county archrival Southern Wayne.

Brooke Newsome dished out a career-best 52 assists. Brittani Billups recorded a double-double -- 16 kills, 10 digs -- to go along with three service aces.

Anna Hajjar posted a team-high seven aces and 22 digs.

Chargers triumph

Wayne Country Day defeated Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 25-8, 28-26, 25-16 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Shelly Sullivan and Sterling Coggins dished out eight and seven assists, respectively, in the three-set win. Jessica Lewis provided eight kills and two blocks. Erin Taylor served seven aces, while Kayla Flanagan contributed four aces.

The Chargers (9-2 overall, 8-1 CPIC) visit conference champion Kerr-Vance Academy today.

Warriors stun Demons

WILSON -- The No. 3 doubles of Danielle Daniel-Kelsi Yates claimed the deciding point and Eastern Wayne stunned state-ranked Wilson Fike 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel-Yates doubled up the Golden Demons' Sarah Flinn-Warren Woodard 8-4 and handed Fike, No. 8 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A poll, just its third loss in 16 outings this season.

The Warriors (9-1 overall) received singles victories from Mollie Musgrave, Casie Musgrave and Daniel. The No. 2 tandem of M. Musgrave-Lindsey Frederick pulled out an 8-6 decision over Lindsey Orr-Meredith Pruden.

Eastern Wayne's match today with Wilson Beddingfield has been postponed until Oct. 8. The Warriors return to action Tuesday at home against reigning ECC champion and county archrival Charles B. Aycock.

Rams blitz Panthers

BETHEL -- State-ranked Greene Central faltered once in 97 contested games and pummeled winless North Pitt 9-0 on the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference scene Wednesday afternoon.

Top-seeded Puja Patel climbed to 9-0 with a straight-set shutout. Teammates Ashley Grant, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Cally Hudson, Abby Sugg and Samantha Taylor each collected a singles point.

Patel-Sugg, McLawhorn-Lauren Carraway and Hudson-Taylor each triumphed in their respective doubles match.

Greene Central, ranked No. 3 in the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association 2-A poll, finished with eight shutouts on the afternoon. The Rams (15-2 overall, 5-0 EPC) entertain C.B. Aycock next Monday.

Rebels prevail

MOUNT OLIVE -- North Duplin claimed all three doubles points and turned back Ayden-Grifton 7-2 in a Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference match at the John Neal Walker Tennis Complex.

The tandems of Jenny Coley-Rebecca Coats, Brittany Coley-Elizabeth Lane and Jodie Williamson-Sarah Jackson helped the Rebels pull off their program-best sixth win of the season.

Jenny Coley, Coats, Lane and Williamson each earned a singles point.

North Duplin (6-3 overall, 6-3 C/SS) snapped its three-match losing streak heading into today's match at Rosewood.

Gators take twinbill

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Thanks to a suspended match from earlier this month, Spring Creek took two matches from Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday. The Gators took the first 5-1 and the second 9-0.

Jamie Johnson, Mary Elizabeth West, Isabelle Messelken, Jameson Mossberg and Ivy Best all collected two singles points for the Gators.

Spring Creek, unbeaten in nine Carolina/Super Six 1-A matches this season, will host Ayden-Grifton today.

Hawks stop Cougars

North Lenoir received goals from eight different players to defeat Goldsboro on Wednesday in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action.

C.C. Croom, Jaimie Ellison, Ethan Schilf, Cory Johnson, Chris Yourdon, Patrick Sasser, Hugo Garcia and Will Norville all scored for the Hawks.

In goal, Bryce Grady stopped four Goldsboro shots.

North Lenoir improves to 7-6-2 overall (3-1 EPC) and next travels to Southern Wayne today.

Cross country

Schlaeppi takes first

Charles B. Aycock's Caroline Schlaeppi emerged the top girls' performer during an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-angular meet at Waynesborough Park.

Schlaeppi ran the course in 25 minutes, 14 seconds -- more than a minute faster than teammate and runner-up Megan Hales. Wilson Hunt's Patty Mallory was third in 26:31, followed by Aycock's Lorena Estrada (27:11).

Hunt's Kathlyn Betts completed the top five, helping the Warriors edge the Golden Falcons 29-32 in the team race. The Saints finished third with 39 points.

On the boys' side, Aycock junior Nik Fredrick logged a third-place time of 21:39. Southern Wayne's Scott Harrell placed fourth in 22:01.

The Warriors' Bobby White recorded the winning time of 19:46.

Hunt easily took the boys' crown with a 23-point output. The Saints nipped the Golden Falcons 57-58 for second-place honors.

Nethercutt cruises

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Chris Nethercutt was 10 seconds better than Tarboro's Nick Oliver in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tri-meet on Wednesday.

Nethercutt placed first with a time of 19 minutes, 53 seconds and helped Greene Central (4-5 overall, 4-4 EPC) to the 26-31 win over Tarboro. Goldsboro also competed, but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.

The Rams' Andrew Jarman (20:25), Alex Brann (21:54) and Will Crandell (22:14) placed third, sixth and seventh respectively.

Goldsboro's Demarkus Herring finished 12th with a time of 24:21.

The Greene Central girls (5-1 overall, 3-1 EPC) were led by Brittany Jones who placed first with a time of 26:46. She was followed by Mackenzie Moore (29:43) in second.

Goldsboro's Danielle Irby was third finishing the 3.1 mile course in 31:24.

* Tennis -- Charles B. Aycock swept its nine matches against Southern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon. Hollie Baker, Alicia Sodoma, Abbey Strickland, Nicole Kessler, Amanda Farmer and Harlie Howard all recorded singles points for the Golden Falcons. The tandems of Baker-Sodoma, Strickland-Kessler and Bailey Dickens-Alexia Torres all won in doubles play. Aycock improves to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the ECC.

* Eastern Wayne 8, C.B. Aycock 0 -- Daryl Pittman's interception helped preserve the Wee Warriors' unbeaten season after three games. Ricky Steiner recorded four solo tackles and Andrew McKeel had several stops for loss yardage. Lee Daniels threw a touchdown pass for Eastern Wayne, while Jimmy Parks and Devonte Corum led the rushing attack.
