Matt Davis scored the game-winning goal late in the opening half and Wayne Christian claimed a 3-2, non-conference decision over Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Monday afternoon.

The Eagles (9-4-0 overall) swept the regular-season series.

Hayden Gardner got Wayne Christian on the scoreboard when he found the back of the net in the game's opening minutes. The Patriots' Louis Griffin tied the game at 1-1 on an unassisted goal.

Wayne Christian seized the lead for good on goals by Gardner and Davis. Jeremy Jefferson and Davis assisted on the goals.

Griffin pulled the Patriots within 3-2 in the second half. However, the Eagles' defense led by John Thomas Norris, Travis Thomas and Matt Rouse kept Faith Christian out of the net.

Eagles keeper Eric Williams recorded eight saves.

Wayne Christian visits Northwood Temple on Friday.

Hawks' Croom gets hat trick

LaGRANGE -- C.C. Croom recorded a hat trick (three goals) to propel North Lenoir to a 4-2 victory over North Pitt in a Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference match.

Jaimie Ellison added a goal for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (6-6-2 overall) improved to 2-1 in the EPC and visits Goldsboro on Wednesday.

Golf

Freeman, Webber lead Warriors

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's Erica Freeman and Paula Webber shared medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 49 during an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Wedgewood Golf Course.

The duo, along with Jasmine Reeves' score of 50, led the Warriors to an overall team score of 148. Southern Wayne ended up second with 153, followed by Wilson Hunt (163) and host Wilson Beddingfield (192).

Charles B. Aycock didn't have enough players to record a score.

Jordan Hill led the Saints with a 50. Taylor Reaves and Alyssa Bradshaw shot 51 and 52, respectively.

Lauren Larison led the Golden Falcons with a 61. Krista Smith provided a 71.

Tennis

Rams top state-ranked Panthers

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central put together one of its best performances of the season to top fourth-ranked East Duplin 8-1 on Monday afternoon.

The Rams' top seed Puja Patel improved to a personal 8-0 by defeating Laura Outlaw 6-1, 6-2. Elizabeth McLawhorn and Cally Hudson both turned in strong outing as well for Greene Central winning 6-4, 6-0 and 7-5, 6-2 respectively.

"Junior Cally Hudson and sophomore Elizabeth McLawhorn turned in great performances for us today in singles and doubles," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "We are a pretty strong team when we get that kind of play from the middle of our lineup. Both girls were very focused today and played very smart tennis."

Greene Central will next host Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe North Lenoir today.

Panthers squeak by Rebels

MOUNT OLIVE -- North Duplin dropped two of three doubles matches to fall to North Johnston 5-4 on Monday afternoon in Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference play.

Jenny Coley, Jodie Williamason and Sarah Jackson all were singles winners for the Rebels. Coley won a 10-6 tie breaker from Sarah Wood to record her victory.

The story though was in doubles action as the tandems of Amber Weaver-Hailey Newsom and J. Narron-Kara Pittman won to give the Panthers the victory.

North Duplin will return to action today when it travels to Ayden-Grifton.

Volleyball

Gators top Eagles in four games

Spring Creek held off upset-minded Wayne Christian 19-25, 25-18, 25-9, 26-24 on Monday evening.

Wayne Christian's Katie Daniels made a triumphant return from an injury with a team-high six kills.

Hanna Kaler tallied a team-high eight aces while Hope Wright, Traci Davis and Kaitlyn Kusuda all added four kills apiece.

Wayne Christian fell to 4-6 overall and will next travel to Northwood Temple on Friday.

Princeton tops Goldsboro

Devon Murphy recorded 10 aces and Ashley Braswell had five kills to lead Princeton to a 25-9, 25-15, 25-4 win over Goldsboro.

Amber Wood led the Bulldogs with 13 assists while Danielle Mitchell chipped in with six aces and two kills.

Princeton (7-6 overall) visits archrival Rosewood today.

Cross Country

Magnus sets another record

DURHAM -- Wayne Christian's Josh Magnus beat his own school record by coming in at 17 minutes, 21 seconds on Monday afternoon at Carolina Christian 1-A rival Cresset Christian.

Magnus broke his previous record by 36 seconds.

Justin Brathwaite was the Eagles' next top finisher as he placed fourth with a time of 22:02 on the 3.1-mile course.

Logan Dawson paced the girls with a top overall time of 27:25. Kayla Kennedy finished second at 30:08.

No team scores were available. Cresset and Johnston Christian also participated.

* Girls' tennis -- Wayne Christian picked up its first victory of the season by defeating Southern Wayne 7-2. The Eagles fell behind 2-0 after Kelly Best and LeAnne Jarman picked up singles wins for the Saints. Wayne Christian would go on to take the next seven matches as Gentry Carlyle, Jenna Wall, Savannah Sutton and Faith Sutton would all win their matches in singles. In doubles, the tandems of James-Whaley, Carlyle-Wall and S. Sutton-F. Sutton were all successful for the Eagles. Wayne Christian improves to 1-3 overall.

* Volleyball -- Faith Christian continued its scorching start as it defeated Liberty Christian of Fayetteville 25-21, 25-3 on Monday. Abigail Pierce had a great afternoon serving with five aces for the Conquerors. Christie Johnson added four aces while Victoria Holdscam also tallied four aces to go along with one dig. Faith Christian improves to 4-1 overall -- its best record ever to begin a season. The Conquerors will play at Cornerstone Christian today.

* Volleyball -- Wayne Christian knocked off Spring Creek 25-22, 25-19 on Monday afternoon. The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they travel to Northwood Temple.

* Soccer -- Wayne Christian blanked Faith Christian of Rocky Mount 1-0 on Monday afternoon. Bryson Tart scored the only goal of the day for the Eagles off of a corner kick. Chase King had another strong game in goal for the Eagles with two saves. WCS improves to 4-0-3 and will next travel to Wayne Country Day on Oct. 1.

Middle schools

* Mount Olive 2, Greenwood 1 (OT) -- Mount Olive survived Greenwood in overtime by winning 2-1 on Monday afternoon. Mount Olive had taken a 1-0 lead before Greenwood tied the game off a goal by Jean Pierre Ponce from Jesse Rice in the 40th minute. Mount Olive later scored the game-winner in the 69th minute. In goal, Sarah Marquis recorded 12 saves for Greenwood while Blake Kangdouangnhot and Hunter Quigley both had strong games defensively. Greenwood (0-3 overall) plays host to Brogden on Oct. 1.
