DUDLEY -- Clarice Sherard pounded out a team-leading 12 kills and Southern Wayne dumped Wilson Hunt 25-21, 25-22, 10-25, 25-21 on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference volleyball scene Thursday afternoon.

Sherard added two blocks for the Saints, who claimed their second consecutive victory after an 0-5 start. Middle hitter Christy Weaver contributed eight kills and three blocks.

"Clarice continues to be consistent all around in hitting, blocking and serving," said second-year Saints coach Colby Mangum. "Christy is back in the middle and has (played) back-to-back outstanding games.

"The match was her first back in the middle since last year."

Weaver drilled 16 kills in Tuesday's victory over Kinston.

Jordan Coor dished out 31 assists and served six aces. Meredith Davis (two aces) and Ashley Davis paced the defense with 17 and 21 digs, respectively.

"We made some position changes and they seem to be making a real difference," said Mangum. "Hunt played great defense and had tough serving, but we've worked on serve receive in practice. It showed tonight."

Southern Wayne (2-5 overall, 2-2 ECC) concludes first-half conference play Tuesday at county rival Charles B. Aycock.

Bulldogs prevail at home

PRINCETON -- Ashley Braswell pounded out 11 kills, Amber Wood handed out 24 assists, and Princeton defeated Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Thursday. The Bulldogs won in four games 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17.

Katie Sasser finished with 10 kills and Brittany Baker had seven kills. Devon Murphy added five aces, five kills, two block and a dig.

"The team did an excellent job communicating and transitioning on the court," Princeton coach Trudi Rast said. "Ashley Braswell and Katie Sasser stepped up and were a strong presence at the net. They did a good job of finding the holes. Communication, serving and court coverage was the key to tonight's win."

Princeton is now 6-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs will visit Goldsboro on Monday.

Hawks breeze past GHS

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir remained undefeated with a 25-11, 25-3, 25-5 Eastern Plains 2-A Conference win over Goldsboro on Thursday.

Anna Kennedy had 19 service points and two aces, and Kayla Sutton had 17 service points and two aces.

Jacquella Ellison and Marrisa Lanier each had five kills. Enjolia Mason finished with seven service points and four aces.

The Hawks are now 13-0 overall and 4-0 in the EPC. North Lenoir will continue conference play against Greene Central on Tuesday.

Panthers run down Gators

KENLY -- Playing without the injured Kristin Smith, Spring Creek lost in three games 25-11, 25-20, 25-20 to Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Johnston on Thursday.

Tasha Whitfield led the Gators with six kills and three aces.

Rebels ground the Eagles

CALYPSO -- North Duplin turned in a team effort in downing Rosewood 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 29-27 in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Thursday.

Heather Hudson tallied 12 kills, six aces, five digs and five blocks for the Rebels. Sam Cates finished with 10 assists, three kills, two aces and one dig. Katlyn Eloshway added eight digs and Katie Swanzey had 11 digs.

"This was a great non-stop and exciting game," North Duplin coach Heather Best said. "Both teams went at each other offensively and defensively. Heather (Hudson) had a great net game both on offense and defense.

"But most importantly, the whole team contributed in some fashion to achieve this win."

Taylor Johnson had 13 kills, 12 digs, four blocks and an ace for Rosewood. Ashley Williams had 15 kills, five digs and three blocks. Paige Babb handed out 10 assists four the Eagles, and Jennifer Hall had nine assists and six digs.

North Duplin is now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Rebels travel to Spring Creek on Tuesday.

Rosewood is 3-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Eagles host Princeton on Tuesday.

Rebels ground the Eagles

GREENVILLE -- Wayne Country Day had little trouble defeating Oakwood 25-18, 25-7, 25-11 on Thursday.

Shelly Sullivan handed out 12 assists, to go along with five digs, five kills and five aces. Sterling Coggins finished with six assists, and Stephanie Sykes added six digs and four kills. Kayla Flanagan chipped in six aces and five digs. Jessica Lewis had eight kills and Kim Martell had five digs.

The Chargers (8-2 overall) rose to 7-1 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference. Wayne Country Day will host conference opponent Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Tuesday.

Soccer

Chargers fall on road

KINSTON -- Cameron Strickland collected Wayne Country Day's lone goal in a 3-1, non-conference loss Thursday evening against Arendell-Parrott Academy.

Cameron Ford assisted on the goal midway through the opening half.

"It was a very pretty goal ... a left-footed shot made by a right-footed player to the side of the net," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "It was good placement."

The Patriots notched three second-half goals, including two within a four-minute stretch. They added a penalty kick with six minutes left in regulation and swept the regular-season series.

Heinemann said Parrott controlled the midfield and that Wayne Country Day didn't have the chemistry for the 80-minute battle.

"We're still a work in progress," said Heinemann.

The Chargers (5-4-1 overall) entertain Kerr-Vance Academy today.

JV sports

* Boys' soccer -- Cody Neal scored the lone goal in Wayne Country Day's 2-1, non-conference loss at Arendell-Parrott Academy. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

* Football -- Freddie Jones, Andray Montgomery and Vontarius Kornegay each rushed for over 100 yards as Goldsboro rolled past 4-A Wilmington Laney 30-0. Jones added three touchdown runs, and the road victory was the third in a row for the Cougars.

* Football -- North Lenoir d. Charles B. Aycock 30-14. North Lenoir led 8-6 at halftime, but the Hawks scored three times in the second half on their way to the win. Aycock's Matthew Woodard had a 65-yard touchdown run, and Shalando McBride added a 15-yard scoring run.

* Volleyball -- Spring Creek fell to North Johnston 25-22, 25-8.

* Volleyball -- Charles B. Aycock d. Eastern Wayne 18-25, 26-24, 27-2. Cara Fredrick and Miranda Aycock delivered critical service points to help Aycock close out the third and final game. Aycock also contributed key service points in the second game, as the Golden Falcons improved to 6-4 overall, and 5-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. Aycock will host Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

* Volleyball -- Rosewood d. North Duplin 25-21, 26-24. Amanda White had three aces and two digs for the Rebels. Angelica Favela had two aces and a kill, and Scarlett Martin had two kills and an ace. Holly Jones had four aces, and Brittney Cabala added three aces for Rosewood. North Duplin is now 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the Carolina 1-A Conference. Rosewood is 3-6 overall, and 3-1 in Conference play and will host Princeton on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Grantham football d. Norwayne 30-0 -- Keenan Winn had four rushing touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass as Grantham defeated Norwayne 30-0. Max Waddell led Grantham defensively with 10 solo tackles. Grantham is now 1-0 overall and travels to Rosewood on Thursday.

* Mount Olive football d. Spring Creek 28-8 -- Anthony McKinney rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns as Mount Olive toppled Spring Creek. Juan Pearsall had 67 yards receiving for Mount Olive, and Sam Ferrell was 2-for-3 passing for 64 yards. Robert Lennox had eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Mount Olive is now 2-0 overall, and 1-0 in conference play.

* Brogden football d. Eastern Wayne 20-6 -- Moses Ramsey had two rushing touchdowns, and Rownell Outlaw returned an interception for a touchdown to guide Brogden to victory. Outlaw also had five solo tackles and, Ryan Gross and Reggie Wynn each had six solo tackles. Cory Edwards added a fumble recovery. Brogden is now 2-0 overall and will travel to Norwayne on Thursday.

* Dillard football d. Greenwood 24-8 -- Dequonta Vann, Octavious Thompson and Koran Alston each had touchdown runs and successful two-point conversion runs for Dillard. Dillard (2-0 overall) travels to Mount Olive on Thursday.
