PIKEVILLE -- Two-time defending Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference men's soccer champion Charles B. Aycock raced to a four-goal advantage and dumped Kinston 5-1 on Wednesday.
Tyson Pearson provided two goals for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the six-team league. It was Aycock's 20th regular-season conference victory in 22 tries since 2005.
Junior Alex Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 16th minute off an assist from Drew Musselman, who served a ball from the left corner of the 18-yard box.
"After our first goal, we settled down and played quite well," said Golden Falcons head coach Kevin Adkins.
Aycock reeled off three goals within a 10-minute stretch late in the first half. Pearson pushed the Golden Falcons' advantage to 2-0 off an assist from Gavin Forrest in the 29th minute. Forrest converted a penalty kick two minutes later and Rodriguez tallied an unassisted goal in the 39th.
Kinston (0-1 ECC) avoided the shutout in the 62nd minute on Reece Cameron's goal. Pearson concluded the scoring in the 69th off Rodriguez's first assist of the game.
The Golden Falcons owned 21-9 edge in shots on goal. Junior keeper Kyle LaFlamme stopped four Viking shots on the Hardy Talton Stadium pitch.
Aycock is the guest of Wilson Hunt next Monday and entertains county archrival Eastern Wayne two evenings later. Both ECC contests kick off at 7 p.m.
"Next week will be interesting and hopefully we can come out on top," said Adkins. "We'll just have to wait and see."
