PIKEVILLE -- While Charles B. Aycock's offense continues to misfire, its defense has been dependable through four weeks of play.

The defense permitted one touchdown, but the Golden Falcons succumbed to first-quarter turnovers in a 21-0, non-conference loss Monday evening against Wilson Fike. The loss left the Golden Falcons winless in four outings and spoiled their home opener at Hardy Talton Stadium.

The Golden Demons exited 3-1 overall.

"I can't ask for any more out of my defense right now," said C.B. Aycock head coach Randy Pinkowski. "We're undersized, we're outmanned and we just keep coming all night long. We really play hard, physical and smart.

"Our defense is keeping us in the game."

A special teams mistake and interception enabled Fike to grab a two-touchdown advantage just four minutes into the game. The Golden Falcons fumbled the opening kickoff and Keith Blunt picked off an Ian Calder pass, which resulted in an 84-yard score.

The Golden Demons turned their first offensive possession into a scoring drive, capped by Michael Brown's 20-yard, fourth-down pass to Brandon Sutton. Sutton dropped the ball as two Aycock defenders sandwiched him at the goal line. However, the official ruled Sutton kept control long enough to get the touchdown.

Earlier in the drive, Brown appeared to complete a long fourth-down pass with ineligible linemen downfield. After a short discussion between all the officials, Fike was awarded a first down at the Aycock 23.

"I get a judgment call that cost me a score by the officials," said Pinkowski. "The lineman was obviously downfield, but what can I say. That's the nature of playing great defense.

"The closer the score stays, the more amplified all of those judgment calls become. I guess I'll have to get the demons exorcised out of me because I can't get one of those calls to go my way no matter what I do."

Aycock's defense tightened and limited the Golden Demons to 125 yards in the final three quarters. The Golden Falcons recorded 17 stops for either no gain or lost yardage.

Junior defensive end Kendre Reid, junior linebacker Kyle Petticoffer and senior linebacker Anthony Holder each sacked Brown one time. Sophomore outside linebacker Tyheim Pitt emerged the top tackler with 12 solo hits. Reid had 11 stops. Calder and Holder notched nine and eight tackles, respectively.

"The defense played tremendous," said Pinkowski.

But the offense wrestled with miscues and misreads throughout the 32-minute contest. Aycock compiled just five first downs and converted only one of 13 third-down plays.

Calder, in his second start under center, completed just 4 of 20 passes for 92 yards. Included was a 54-yard strike to Jacob Pendleton on a fake punt in the opening quarter. But Blunt intercepted Calder's next pass to stop the drive.

Pinkowski maintains the Golden Falcons are a "click" away from firing on all cylinders offensively. Calder is digesting small chunks of the offensive playbook, but needs more snaps in games to gain confidence.

"Right now, we're kind of limping along without a lot of options offensively," said Pinkowski. "And you have to credit Fike for doing a great job of mixing up their pass coverage. When you've got a young, inexperienced quarterback in there, that's what you do.

"That was a great plan by them to keep our offense kind of stymied all night."
