Greene Central eases past Kinston

KINSTON -- Greene Central notched two first-quarter touchdowns and cruised past Kinston 25-16 on Friday evening.
Tyrell Lane accounted for the Rams' first touchdown, a 1-yard run with less than three minutes remaining in the period. Quarterback William Brown hooked up with Curtis Braswell for a 23-yard strike with 40 seconds to go.
The teams traded touchdowns within a 25-second span in the second period.
After Kinston pulled within 16-8, Braswell returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The Rams, of the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference, led 22-8 at halftime.
The Vikings, again, climbed within a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Michael Thompson's 42-yard romp closed the gap to 22-16. But Greene Central's Abel Real booted a decisive 28-yard field goal with three-plus minutes remaining in regulation.
Officials halted the game with 2:50 to go due to threatening weather in the area.
Brownfinished 10-for-21 passing for 144 yards and added another 44 yards on the ground. Jesse Creech led the Rams defense with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Manny Moye added seven tackles, and Brooks Best had a pair of interceptions.
Greene Central (4-1 overall) hosts undefeated James Kenan next week.
