Mount Olive Tuesday wrap-up

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- April Jacobs scored in the opening minute and Lyndsay Brennan eased up the all-time, career-goal scoring list at Mount Olive College during a 3-0, Conference Carolinas victory at Coker College.

Jacobs collected her third goal of the season at the 52-second mark with a blast over the Cobras' goalie. Kate Painter provided the second goal, her first of the season, nine minutes later.

The score remained the same until the 80th minute when Brennan scored her 30th career goal, tying her for second place all-time in Trojans' scoring history.

Ali O'Steen recorded one save for Mount Olive, which improved to 2-3-0 overall in its Conference Carolinas opener. The Trojans entertain Belmont Abbey at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Trojans hammer Dogs

WILSON -- Corie Skislak helped thwart a game-two comeback and Sam Mitchell recorded a match-high 15 kills to lead Mount Olive to a 30-18, 30-20, 30-20 victory over archrival Barton in Conference Carolinas play Tuesday.

Alicia Mote added 12 kills, while Mallory Peavler sparked the defense with 25 digs.

Mount Olive (5-8 overall, 1-1 CC) broke away from a one-point lead in game one as Racey Bartley's four-point service run gave the Trojans a 13-8 lead. Bartley, Mitchell and Mote combined for 15 of the Trojans' 17 opening-game kills.

Skislak recorded a kill on game point to give Mount Olive an early advantage.

The Trojans built an early seven-point lead in game two and appeared to be well on their way to a two-game lead. But Barton (1-7, 0-3) held Mitchell to only one kill and pulled within 16-14.

"We just refocused and started executing," said Skislak, a 5-11 junior middle hitter from Gulf Breeze, Fla.

Skislak recorded four of her seven kills in game two and served an ace as the Trojans built the lead back to nine. Skislak also had two of her four blocks in the second game. Mote and Bartley combined for nine kills in game two as the Trojans took a two-game lead.

Caitlin Skislak opened game three with an ace and Mitchell added eight more kills as Mount Olive built the lead to as many as 12 points. Peavler and Corie Skislak combined on what may have been the play of the night in the third game.

Peavler dug up a laser from just off the floor and Skislak flicked the ball over her shoulder with her back to the net for the kill.

Unlike last week's conference opener against St. Andrews where the Trojans repeatedly rallied from behind, Mount Olive was able to establish substantial leads by the 20-point mark in all three games Tuesday.

"That's something we've talked about," said Skislak. "We need to have that intensity from the first point rather than wait until our backs are against the wall."

Joanie Werling and Mariangelix Cordero continued to split time at the setter position as Werling collected 24 assists and Cordero finished with 13. Bartley tallied nine kills and two blocks, while Kailey Preece added three blocks, all in game three.

Mount Olive entertains Pfeiffer on Friday and Queens University on Saturday afternoon.

Greene ties for 4th

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Wayne Christian School graduate Jonathan Greene finished tied for fourth out of 45 golfers and Mount Olive finished sixth overall at the Anderson University Men's Golf Invite, which concluded Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans shot a team score of 601 to place sixth out of nine teams. The second-round score comes just one day after the Trojans shot their third-lowest team score in school history.

After completing the first round at 3-under-par, Greene, a junior from Goldsboro, completed the 36-hole tournament with an even par 44. In the first round, Greene was among three golfers to break 70 and was one of four golfers to shoot under par.

Just two golfers broke par and only one shot under 70 on Tuesday.

Ryan Campbell (151) tied for 17th, while Mick Moberg (153) tied for 21st. Pete Skirpstas (156) and Brad Alford (158) tied for 29th and 34th, respectively.

Mount Olive returns to action next Monday and Tuesday as the Trojans head to Clayton to compete in the Dogfight At The Neuse, hosted by Barton College. Greene won last year's tournament in a playoff.

Moberg fares well

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Kristin Moberg tied for third out of 44 golfers and Mount Olive moved up a spot to finish sixth at the Anderson University Women's Golf Invite.

The Trojans shot a team score of 702 and placed sixth out of nine teams. Mount Olive was tied for sixth after Monday's first round.

Moberg, a sophomore from Gavle, Sweden, and younger sister of Trojan men's golfer Mick Moberg, shot a 160. Her first-round 76 was the second-lowest, 18-hole score in school history. Only two golfers broke 80 Tuesday.

Eastern Wayne graduate Kristen Freeman shot 170, while Deborah Woodrum (185) tied for 31st. Brooke Newell (193) finished 39th and Kristi Corbett (195) placed 40th.

Mount Olive returns to action next Monday and Tuesday as the Trojans head to New London to compete in the Lady Falcon Invitational, hosted by Pfeiffer University.

Men's soccer

COKER, S.C. -- In a match that saw more yellow cards than shot attempts, regionally seventh-ranked Mount Olive fell to Coker 1-0.

A total of 12 yellow cards were issued, eight against the Trojans.

Mount Olive (3-3-0 overall, 0-1-0 CC) had to play a man down for the final 56 minutes after a Trojan player received his second yellow card. Seven different Trojans and four Coker players all received yellow cards in the match. In three instances during the match, yellow cards were issued against members of both teams.

The Trojans were limited to two shots, but both were on goal. Jaquan Respus and Frank Stilley were denied on saves by Coker goalkeeper Joel Tyson.

Mount Olive held its opponent scoreless in the first half for the sixth consecutive match, but Coker (4-3-0, 1-0-0) broke the tie in the 57th minute on a goal by Dennis Gonzalez.

The loss was Mount Olive's third in a row after starting the season 3-0-0.
