Faith Christian moved to 2-0 in the North Carolina Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A Conference with a win in four games 25-16, 15-15, 23-25, 25-16 over Mount Calvary on Thursday.

Renee Provencal led the Conquerors with 18 assists and one kill. Brooke Anderson added four kills, three digs, one block and one assist. Kaitlyn Flores chipped in six kills, two digs and one assist, while Alyssa Hill had four kills and one dig.

Heather Crumpler tallied four kills and three aces, Bethany Dale had three digs and Christina Phillips finished with three digs and three kills. Brittany Dale chimed in with one dig, one kill and one ace, Rebecca Smith handed out three assists and Jennifer Christopher added an ace.

Faith Christian (2-0 overall) travels to Neuse Christian today.

NL sweeps Saints

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir needed just three games to move past Southern Wayne 25-12, 25-21, 25-11 on Thursday.

Jordan Hudson led the way with 22 assists, 18 service points and two aces. Kayla Sutton added seven kills and three blocks. Marrisa Lanier finished with seven kills.

The Hawks (8-0 overall) begin Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play at home Tuesday against Farmville Central.

Rams outlast Chargers

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central outlasted Ayden Grifton in five games 15-25, 25-16, 18-25,25-7, 15-13 on Thursday.

Elizabeth Webb led the Rams with 22 service points and Amber Morris chipped in 18 service points.

Greene Central (2-6 overall) visits Wilson Beddingfield on Monday.

Eagles defend their nest

Rosewood sent Union packing with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 loss on Thursday.

Caroline Tart led the Eagles with 10 kills, one service ace and an assist. Ashley Williams chimed in with eight kills, five aces, a dig and an assist. Taylor Johnson added eight kills, one dig, one block and two aces, while Mary Jo Moore had two digs, a kill and an ace.

Christie Phillips tallied two kills, Paige Babb had 10 assists, two digs and two aces, and Jennifer Hall had 12 assists and an ace.

The Eagles (3-3 overall) start Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday at Ayden-Grifton.

Rebels blank Wildcats

CALYPSO -- Behind a solid performance from Heather Hudson, North Duplin swept Hobbton 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 on Thursday.

Hudson finished with 15 kills, 18 service points, three aces, three blocks and two digs. Sam Cates added four aces, four digs and one block, while Katlyn Eloshway tallied 19 service points and four aces.

Felicia Lynch had five assists, three aces and a kill and Angelica Favela handed out three assists.

North Duplin rose to 2-2 overall.

Wildcats spike Princeton

PRINCETON -- Princeton continued to show signs of improvement in a 8-25, 15-25, 21-25 loss to Bunn on Thursday.

Amber Wood led the Bulldogs with seven digs, seven assists, one ace and one kill. Ashley Braswell pitched in four kills and two digs, Nikki Capps added four digs, Katie Gibbs had three kills and a dig as well. Danielle Mitchell finished with two digs and Brittany Baker added a kill.

Princeton travels to Union on Monday.

Segura's goal lifts SW

LaGRANGE -- Trailing 1-0 at the half, unbeaten Southern Wayne rallied for a 2-1 victory over North Lenoir on Thursday night.

Cory Johnson's goal gave the Hawks the lead at the break. Jesus Rodriguez tallied his third goal of the season on a penalty kick to get the Saints on the board in the second half.

Benny Segura's goal proved to be the game winner. Mario Aguilar had 12 saves for the Saints including one on a penalty kick.

The Saints (3-0 overall) visit James Kenan next Wednesday.

Cross Country

Magnus shatters record

DURHAM -- Josh Magnus turned in a school-record performance as Wayne Christian ran past Cresset Christian on Thursday afternoon.

Magnus ran the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 20 seconds -- 14 seconds faster than former record holder Doug Johnson, who graduated this past spring.

Jennifer Price was the top runner on the girls side with a time of 25:45.

The Eagles are the guests of Eastern Wayne next Tuesday.

Aycock shells Kinston

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock didn't lose a set all afternoon and rolled to a 9-0 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston on Thursday.

Top-seeded Kristen Prosser got things started with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Emily Broadway. Courtney Barnes, Emilee Quinn, Jessica Davis, Mallory Strickland and Lauren Pierce also had singles wins for the Golden Falcons.

C.B. Aycock (6-3 overall, 2-0 ECC) travels to Wilson Hunt on Tuesday.

Earning singles wins for the Rams were Puja Patel, Ashley Grant, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Cally Hudson, Abby Sugg and Samantha Taylor.

WARSAW -- Rosewood doubled up Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference member James Kenan 6-3 on Thursday.

Saints finish second

NEW BERN -- Southern Wayne finished second out of four teams competing at Carolina Pines Golf and Country Club on Thursday.

Topsail finished in first place with a score of 144, while Southern Wayne ended the day with a mark of 152. Havelock shot 166 collectively and Washington was fourth at 192.

Topsail's Katherine Rand and Brooke Wright both had the low rounds of the day at 42. The Saints Jordan Hill and Alyssa Bradshaw both fired a 50, while Taylor Reaves shot a 52.

Southern Wayne will host its first Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match of the season on Tuesday.

JV football

Cougars rally past Falcons

Vern Kornegay and Freddy Jones each tallied a fourth-quarter touchdown as Goldsboro edged C.B. Aycock 28-18 at Cougar Stadium.

Kornegay (112 yards) broke free for an 83-yard score, while Jones rambled in from 4 yards out.

Goldsboro's Richard Murrell opened the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown run. Jones and defensive mate Jarrion Reid combined for a safety to push the Cougars ahead 8-0.

C.B. Aycock answered in the second quarter on Michael Sawyer's 20-yard touchdown pass to Cortez Spring. The Golden Falcons pulled within 16-12 at halftime and moved ahead 18-16 in the third quarter.

David Gurganus completed 8 of 13 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns for Aycock. Davonte Pettaway hauled in three receptions for 20 yards, while Matt Woodard collected 85 yards and two scoring strikes on four catches.

Davonte Johnson also had one catch for five yards. Shepard Whitfield rushed for 27 yards. Josh Dixon picked off three Goldsboro passes and supplied a touchdown.

* Boys soccer -- Wayne Christian improved to 3-0-1 overall with a 1-0, non-conference victory over Jacksonville High School. Greg Alexander collected the Eagles' lone goal and keeper Chase King earned the shutout. Wayne Christian travels to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount today.

* Volleyball -- North Lenoir climbed to 8-0 with a 25-14, 25-9 non-conference win over Southern Wayne. The Hawks face Eastern Plains 2-A rival Farmville Central on Tuesday.

* Volleyball -- Wayne Christian continued its unbeaten run with a 25-21, 25-22 victory over Spring Creek at "The Swamp." The Eagles (6-0 overall) visit Carolina Christian 1-A foe Erwin Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.

* Volleyball -- Greene Central rose to 6-2 overall with a 25-19, 22-25, 25-14 decision over Ayden-Grifton.

* Volleyball -- Chelsea Sawkiw had two assists and Megan Church provided three digs, one assist and one service ace in Rosewood's 24-26, 20-25 loss to Union on Thursday afternoon. Rachael Kornegay and Karen Babb each recorded a kill for the Eagles, now 0-4 overall

* Girls tennis -- Greene Central defeated EasternWayne 9-0 on Thursday afternoon. Casey Perry, Jessica Gray, Abbey Dail, Meredith Carraway, Caroline Byrd and Dena Turnage each grabbed a singles point for the Rams.

* Volleyball -- North Duplin lost 11-25, 16-25 to Hobbton. The Rebels are 0-4 overall.

9th grade

* Football -- Tyler Farmer and Craig Murdock hooked up on three touchdown passes in C.B. Aycock's 24-0 victory over East Wake. Marquis Bryant added a 40-yard touchdown run.

Correction

A jersey switch among players caused an error in the C.B. Aycock-Spring Creek soccer story on Thursday. The Golden Falcons' Brandon Davis wore Tyler Ruffin's jersey and scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Ruffin was injured and did not play.
