Chargers erase goose egg on CPIC men's soccer scene

GREENVILLE -- David Wilson collected a hat trick (three goals) and Wayne Country Day hammered Oakwood 10-1 on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference scene Tuesday afternoon.

Cameron Ford added two goals for the Chargers, who claimed their first CPIC win in three outings. Will Wolf, Matt Wolf, eighth-grader Hil Tanner and E.J. York provided one goal apiece.

Peter Clark scored Oakwood's lone goal.

"Our team continues to be plagued by simple mistakes in the backfield," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "Our defense is inexperienced and they're still trying to work out some kinks."

The Chargers (3-3 overall) fired 38 shots on goal.

"We dominated a majority of the game with beautiful touch passes to the sidelines and crosses, and we finished quite well."

WCDS entertains Rosewood on Thursday.

Eagles endure first loss

Wayne Christian dropped its first match of the season in the form of a 2-0 loss to visiting Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday.

The Warriors beat Eagles' keeper Eric Williams off a rebound in the first half and increased their lead to 2-0 midway through the second half.

"We played a hard, physical game," Wayne Christian coach Daryl Anderson said. "It was a close game, but the Warriors capitalized on a couple of costly mistakes. Otherwise, the Eagles played an outstanding game."

Wayne Christian falls to 4-1 overall and will travel to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.

North Lenoir no trouble for C.B. Aycock

LaGRANGE -- Charles B. Aycock outshot North Lenoir 26-8 and turned a 2-0 halftime lead into a 4-0 win on Tuesday.

A goal from Alex Rodriguez on an assist from Patrick Shultze and a penalty kick by Gavin Forrest put the Golden Falcons up at the break.

Aycock added to its lead in the 46th minute when Rodriguez found Thomas Oliver, who put the ball in the back of the net for a 3-0 cushion.

Jorge Delgado fed Pepe Alejo for the game's final goal in the 50th minute. Brandon Davis had five saves for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock (2-2-1 overall) travels to Spring Creek today.

Southern Wayne blanks James Kenan

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of James Kenan on Tuesday.

Jesus Rodriguez and Miguel Torres each had goals for the Saints in the first half.

Benny Segura tacked on a goal in the second half and Mario Aguilar finished with 13 saves in goal.

The Saints (1-0-0) visit North Johnston today.

Greene Central hammers North Pitt

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central didn't lose a game, let a lone a set in its 9-0 rout of North Pitt on Tuesday.

Puja Patel, Ashley Grant, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Abby Sugg, Lauren Carraway and Samantha Taylor were all singles winners for the Rams.

Greene Central (5-2 overall) has won 133 of its last 134 conference matches and will play at East Duplin today. East Duplin is ranked third in the state in among Class 2-A teams.

Rosewood drops conference opener

Two-time defending Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference champion Rosewood suffered a 5-4 loss against Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers won two of three doubles matches to secure the win.

Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols and Jillian Casey each picked up a singles point for the Eagles. Bailey-Nichols claimed the lone doubles point for Rosewood.

Golden Falcons down Greene Central

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock snapped its four-match losing streak with a 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15 on Tuesday afternoon.

Beth Carter and Bridgette Briggs each had seven kills for the Golden Falcons. Lee Ann Sager added six aces. Emily Jordan was also a key part of Aycock's victory.

Aycock (1-4 overall) travels to North Lenoir today.

Spring Creek rallies past Hobbton

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Unbeaten Spring Creek dropped the opening set to Hobbton, but rallied for a 22-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-17 non-conference victory Tuesday afternoon.

Kristin Smith finished with 14 kills, six blocks and four aces for the Gators. Ashley Barwick tallied 16 assists and five aces, Brandi Simpkins added eight kills and four aces, while Tasha Whitfield chipped in 17 kills. Brooke Alberston also had 18 assists.

Spring Creek (3-0 overall) is the guest of Midway today.

Jags down Eagles

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood hitters Taylor Johnson pounded out 11 kills and Ashley Williams contributed 10 kills, but Farmville Central prevailed 16-25, 25-19, 25-21, 11-25, 15-9 on Tuesday afternoon.

Paige Babb and Jennifer Hall handed out 14 and nine assists, respectively. Hall also provided five kills and three service aces. Babb and Ashley Shaw recorded two kills apiece.

Rosewood (2-3 overall) entertains Union on Thursday.

Golf

Reeves, Freeman lead EW

Jasmine Reeves carded a 90 as Eastern Wayne dropped a 232-292 decision to perennial 3-A power Wilson Fike on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Demons' Amy Otteson claimed medalist honors with a 68.

Erica Freeman shot a 96 for the Warriors, followed by Madison Sauls (106) and Courtney Wegman (110). Hannah Grantham and Katie Parrish also participated in the dual meet.

Eastern Wayne begins Eastern Carolina Conference play Sept. 11 at Southern Wayne.

Walnut Creek Ladies

Linda Cannon claimed play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

In first flight competition, Linda Watson won low gross while Novella Zambelli took low net. In second flight action, Nancy Satterfield seized low gross and Betty Holloway captured low net.

Josie Ottaviani grabbed low putts for the field.

EW girls unbeaten in ECC

By placing five runners in the top eight finishers on Wednesday, Eastern Wayne's girls cross country team remained unbeaten in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference by defeating Wilson Hunt and Southern Wayne.

The Warriors' Kelly Gregorcyk led was the top female runner with a time of 27 minutes, two seconds.

On the boys' side, Hunt finished first with a score of 21, while Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne finished second and third respectively. Eastern Wayne's Stefan Henshaw and Tim Wright finished third and fourth respectively, while teammate Tyler Thorton was ninth. Scott Harrell of Southern Wayne finished eighth.

Eastern Wayne's girls improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the boys are now 3-2 overall and 3-1 in conference competition. The Warriors will compete again on Thursday at the "Bo Run" Invitational at Boyd Lee Park in Winterville.

Wanye Christian's boys outran visiting Princeton on Tuesday with a final score of 22-33.

Leading the Eagles was Josh Magnus, who finished with the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 53 seconds. Wayne Christian's Justin Brathwaite was second with a time of 21:46.

The Eagles' Jennifer Price finished second on the girls' side with a time of 26:23.
