KINSTON -- Frederick's Chorye Spoone recorded 10 strikeouts and permitted just two hits in a 3-0 victory over Kinston at historic Grainger Stadium.
It was the regular-season home finale for the K-Tribe, which begins a seven-game road swing today at Winston-Salem. Kinston owns a scant two-game lead over Salem in Southern Division play.
Spoone (9-9) worked seven innings and got the only run he needed in the second inning. Jake Duncan led off with a single, stole second and eventually scored on Pete Maestreles' sacrifice fly.
Duncan's single was the only hit allowed by Kinston right-hander Sung-Wei Tseng (6-9), who threw five quality innings. The Keys' Mark Fleisher added a sixth-inning, two-RBI single off reliever Ryan Edell.
Kinston's Chris Niesel tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Meanwhile, Jason Burch notched the save for Frederick.
Mudcats rained out
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Rain postponed Monday evening's Southern League tilt between Montgomery and Carolina.
The game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader for today. The Mudcats' Gaby Hernandez is slated to start the opening game, with Blake McGinley throwing in the nightcap.
Carolina returns home Thursday for a five-game series against Tennessee.
