CLAYTON -- Defenses ruled the field at Clayton on Friday night.
With neither Charles B. Aycock or Clayton able to get anything going on offense, all it took was a second-quarter field goal to give the Comets a 3-0 victory.
"It was a great defensive game on both sides of the ball," said Aycock head coach Randy Pinkowski. "You go up to Clayton and hold them to three points -- that's pretty good."
A 38-yard field goal just before the halftime horn by Clayton kicker Sam Eberwein was the only points that would be tallied on the evening.
For the Golden Falcons, Pinkowski was ecstatic with his defense's effort -- especially the play of Anthony Holder, Tyhiem Pitt and Michael King.
Holder recorded 11 tackles and two sacks while Pitt had six tackles and King four tackles and a fumble recovery.
"They all played well for us," Pinkowski said.
Opportunities to put points on the board were there for Aycock, but shady play on the offensive line left quarterback Stephen Strouse constantly running for his life.
"We just had too many execution mistakes with the offensive line," said Pinkowski. "We blew some protections. We just have some work to do up front."
Strouse did manage to complete 6 of 16 passes for 32 yards.
On the ground, the Golden Falcons were led by Devin Sanders who recorded 26 yards on three carries.
Aycock falls to 0-1 this season and will next travel to Greene Central on Friday.
"I saw signs of brightness, but we've got to get the kinks out," said Pinkowski. "As long as we have everything worked out by conference time we'll be OK."
