KINSTON -- Mother Nature washed out Kinston's hopes for a comeback and Potomac moved within one victory of earning a three-game sweep at historic Grainger Stadium.
Brett McMillan's RBI double and Justin Maxwell's sacrifice fly helped the Nationals seize early momentum and cruise to a 3-1 lead after 51/2 innings. But a severe thunderstorm, which brought heavy rain and dangerous lightning, forced stadium officials to pull the tarp onto the field.
The game never resumed.
Matt Whitney accounted for Kinston's lone run -- a third-inning RBI single which scored Jose Constanza. Chris Marrero provided Potomac's final run -- a solo homer off K-Tribe reliever Neil Wagner. Erik Stiller (3-5) started and yielded two earned runs on four hits in five innings of work.
Potomac hurler Justin Jones (7-8) allowed one earned run on six hits.
The teams conclude their three-game series today. Kinston's lead has dropped to four games over Salem in Southern Division play with 11 games to go.
