CHERRYVILLE -- Jordan Williams' grand slam home run capped an eighth-inning uprising as Wayne County South Post 11 eliminated Southwest Brunswick 15-6 in the American Junior Legion State tournament on Saturday evening.
Tied at 5-5 after seven innings, Jordan Hood started Wayne County South's game-winning surge with a single. Hood stole second and scored on Williams' single to make it 6-5.
Michael Douglass delivered a two-RBI double and Matt Neal provided an RBI single before Williams smacked the bases-clearing home run. Williams finished with three hits and five RBI in five at-bats.
South Brunswick tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth. Raymond Velasquez entered from the bullpen, induced a ground ball and spoiled South Brunswick's suicide squeeze attempt with runners on first and third.
Two Post 11 errors and a walk allowed South Brunswick to load the bases in the seventh. Velasquez, however, recorded two ground-ball outs and a flyout to end the threat.
South Brunswick scored one run in the eighth before Velasquez closed the door to keep Wayne County South (17-15) alive in the double-elimination tournament.
Taylor Allen and Douglass complemented Williams' performance with two hits apiece. Matt Neal (RBI), Hood, Cody Richards and Rob Herring (RBI) contributed one hit apiece.
