ZEBULON -- John Jaso delivered a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning and Southern Division-leading Montgomery (Ala.) turned back Carolina 3-2 before a near-capacity crowd at Five County Stadium on Thursday evening.

Brett Hayes' two-RBI, fourth-inning double gave the Mudcats a 2-0 advantage.

The Biscuits (20-8) loaded the bases on two infield hits and a hit batsman in the sixth. After a run-scoring groundout, Jaso squirted a grounder under reliever Jesus Delgado's glove, which produced two runs and a 3-2 lead.

Delgado (5-7) replaced Blake McGinley, who scattered five hits and fanned three Montgomery batters in a five-inning stint. McGinley earned a no-decision in his second start of the season.

Montgomery's Nick DeBarr and Dale Thayer combined for the final three scoreless innings as the Mudcats dropped to 13-15 in second-half play. Thayer's 18th save was his first this season working two innings. He had not appeared in a game since July 14th.

Christopher Mason (12-4), who entered the game with the top earned-run average in the Southern League, notched his circuit-leading 12th. He worked six innings and notched a season-high eight strikeouts.

Along with Hayes' double, Rex Rundgren had two of Carolina's seven hits, while Jai Miller registered his third consecutive two-hit game.

The teams continue their series tonight.
