K-Tribe loses in 9th inning

KINSTON -- Potomac notched two ninth-inning runs and upended Kinston 5-4 at historic Grainger Stadium on Monday evening.

Chris Marrero slugged a lead-off home run off K-Tribe reliever Jim Deters to forge a 4-4 tie. Matt Meyer came out of the bullpen to spell Deters, but couldn't stop the Nationals' momentum.

Matt Rogelstadt singled and Marvin Lowrance walked. Brian Peacock moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Meyer fanned the next batter, but the K-Tribe infield didn't cleanly field Brandon Powell's slow-rolling grounder.

Rogelstadt scored to make it 5-4.

Kinston threatened in the ninth on Matt Whitney's lead-off double. However, he was left stranded as the K-Tribe suffered its ninth defeat in second-half action this season.

Meyer (2-2) took the loss behind Deters, who surrendered two earned runs in three innings. Sung-Wei Tseng worked five innings and received a no-decision.

David Trahan grabbed his first win for the Nationals and Adam Carr mopped up for his fifth save.

Josh Rodriguez put Kinston on the board with a first-inning, solo home run. John Drennen supplied a two-out, RBI double later in the opening inning.

Whitney homered in the fourth.

The teams continue their four-game series tonight. Game time is 7 p.m.
