MOUNT OLIVE -- Sara Christie, who finished her playing career as Mount Olive's record holder for career, season and single-match assists, has been named assistant coach for the Trojan women's and men's volleyball teams.

Christie, who also ranks among the top 20 NCAA Division II career assists leaders, is a 2006 graduate of Mount Olive College.

A three-time All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference setter, Christie finished her career with 5,992 assists. Her 1,666 assists in her freshman year are a school record, as are her 65 assists vs. St. Andrews in 2004. Christie also earned All-Atlantic Region honors during her playing days.

Christie spent last fall as an assistant coach for the Southern Wayne High School girls' volleyball team, serving under former Trojan teammate Colby Mangum.

Southern Wayne reached the 2006 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A playoffs. The Saints lost in the opening round.

Christie has also coached area club teams.

"I'm very excited to be coaching here," said Christie. "Mount Olive is such a part of me, it just seems like a natural fit to be able to continue with the volleyball program as a coach. It'll be a new experience to be a coach for a men's team, but I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Christie helped the Trojans establish the single-season win record (30) as a freshman. Mount Olive tied for the CVAC regular-season title in 2006.

Christie played her final two years at Mount Olive under current head coach Sasha Gutor. The Trojans begin their 2007 season in August.
