North Lenoir pounds Whiteville

LaGRANGE -- East Carolina signee Sthil Sowers and Tyler Smith each slugged a two-run home run in a seven-run first inning, as the two-time defending Class 2-A state baseball champion North Lenoir pummeled Whiteville 16-4 in five innings on Thursday evening.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional series. Game two is 7 p.m. today at Legion Stadium in Whiteville.
John Alphin added a three-run shot later in the first inning and sent Wolfpack right-hander Michael Wright to the dugout. He later connected on another three-run homer in the fourth inning, and concluded the night with six RBI.
Andrew Manning belted a three-run shot as North Lenoir built an insurmountable 13-0 advantage.
For the game, Sowers and Alphin both tallied three hits while Bryce Grady, C.C. Croom and Manning all had two hits apiece.
North Lenoir improved to 26-3 overall.

Novella Zambelli won play of the day while Faye Franklin took low gross.
Betty Holloway came away with low net honors and Gaye Bryant claimed the low putts title.

In the weekly tournament Shelley Leder won game of the week.
Linda Watson walked away with low net and low putts.
Dixie Youth Majors
Wayne Country Day 2, Salston 0 -- The tandem of Cody Neal and Dare Uzzell once again had strong performances on the mound to lead Wayne Country Day to the win. Neal struck out nine in three innings to record the win while Uzzell finished up with a save as he struck out six in three innings. At the plate, Cole Davis had two hits including a home run and a double while Neal also had two hits including a double. Wayne Country Day improves to 6-4 on the season.
Wayne Country Day 7, Wayne County Falcons 6 -- Cody Neal and Dare Uzzell both had quality outing on the mound with Uzzell picking up the win in relief for Wayne Country Day. At the plate, Cole Davis and Uzzell both tallied two hits while Cole Newsome, Julian Mitchell and Ryan Kelly all contributed one hit each.
Wayne County Falcons 9, Rosewood A's 3 -- Jared Rozzi and Brett Bartlett combined for a four-hitter and eight strikeouts in the six-inning game. Rozzie pounded out three hits. Dee Mabry led the A's with two hits. The Falcons improved to 9-1.
Dixie Youth Majors
St. Paul Bishops 19, Falcons 11 -- St. Paul trailed 10-0 after two innings. Joshua Moore and Gray Sasser combined for six walks and six runs scored in the comeback. Matthew Mintz threw a complete game and recorded seven strikeouts. St. Paul improved to 6-2, while the Falcons dropped to 7-1. The Bishops traveled to Rosewood on Thursday.
Wayne County Falcons 14, Seymour Johnson Yankees 3 -- Chase Horton, Nick Leggett and Chris Barbour combined for a one-hitter. Horton, Leggett and Tyler Powell cranked out three hits apiece for the Falcons. Jordan Salter, Zach Howard and Alex Weaver each contributed two hits.
