K-Tribe splits doubleheader

KINSTON -- Kinston split a doubleheader with Winston-Salem on Thursday night as the Warthogs took game one 2-1 in eight innings. The K-Tribe bounced back in game two and pounded Winston-Salem 8-2 to stay four games ahead of the Warthogs in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.

In the nightcap, Kinston took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third inning when its bats came alive.

The K-Tribe scored a season-high six runs in the inning as they sent 10 batters to the plate.

Three walks loaded the bases and then Nathan Panther connected with an RBI double. Niuman Romero hit an RBI single one batter later.

Following a Mike Butia sacrifice fly, Josh Rodriguez put the cherry on top with a two-run homer.

Kinston reliever Jim Deters (3-2) made his first Carolina League start of the year, picking up the win by throwing five innings and giving up one earned run.

John Lujan (1-2) suffered the loss in his first start for Winston-Salem.

Kinston knocked 10 hits in the game and has now had nine or more hits in nine consecutive games.

The win snapped a season worst three-game losing streak for the K-Tribe after they dropped game one of the double header 2-1.

In game one, Aaron Cunningham crushed the first pitch of the game over the left field wall for a solo home run giving Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.

Kinston tied the game in the third inning when John Drennen lined a two-out RBI single to score Jose Constanza and knot the game at one.

The score would remain tied as the two teams played into extra innings of the game originally scheduled for seven.

Micah Schnurstein took care of that by smashing a solo home run in the top of the eighth to put Winston-Salem on top 2-1.
