WILSON -- Russell Turner fended off four match points and emerged the No. 1 flight singles winner in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A men's tennis championships.

Turner turned back top-seeded Chris Cash of Greenfield 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 on the Barton College Tennis Complex courts. Turner, the No. 2 seed, opened tournament play with a straight-set victory over Trinity's Lee Kincheloe. He claimed a three-set, semifinal-round decision over Steven Lamm of Faith Christian-Rocky Mount.

The Chargers' Kevin Martel emerged victorious at No. 4 singles. The No. 1 seed, Martel crushed Gaston Day's William Farmer 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. He eliminated Daniel Kim, of Trinity Academy of Raleigh, in the semifinal round. Martel stopped Greenfield's Robert Daniel 6-3, 6-0 in the finals.

Second-seeded Luxman Srikantha claimed second at No. 6 singles. He defeated Subin Lee (Cresset) and Trinity Academy's Tanner Crake, the No. 3 seed, in the semifinals.

Top-seeded Almon Hall, of Faith Christian-RM, stopped Srikantha 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the championship match.

Fellow Chargers David Wilson, Byron Bryan and George Mayo competed in singles play. Wilson reached the semifinals, while Bryan and Mayo each endured a first-round loss.

All three WCDS doubles teams tumbled in the semifinals.

Golf

Wood, Forbis win Jack & Jill

Dustin Wood and Charles B. Aycock standout Kelli Forbis prevailed in the 5th annual Jack and Jill tournament contested this weekend at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Wood-Forbis carded a two-day total of 61-66--127 and edged Dan and Pate Beasley by one stroke.

John and Novella Zambelli emerged the First Flight champions with a 72-68--140. Ted and Jewel Ivey ended up one stroke behind.

Gilbert and Joyce Medlin claimed a 137-140 decision over Jim Eason-Bridgett Benedict in Second Flight competition. Tim and Tammy Bunn defeated Tom and Loyola Murr 148-152 to win the Third Flight championship.

Gary and Pat Coe and Don and Linda Lister carded identical rounds of 80-79 in the Fourth Flight championship. The Coes were declared the winner.

Brindley fares well

GREENVILLE -- Kevin Brindley of Goldsboro posted an 18-hole round of 77 and took second place during championship flight competition in an Amateur Golf Tour event played at Ironwood Golf Course.

Fellow county golfer Kevin Harrington finished with an 81 in the same flight.

Robert Blair took third in Flight A play with a 79. Carl Evans was 11th overall in Flight B. Cory Watson was ninth in Flight C.

Eastern Ladies League

Linda Watson captured first low gross in the championship flight during play in a recent Eastern League Finals match at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Donna Adams claimed second low net in first flight. Lou Ellen Flowers won first low net in second flight play. Betty Jean Gurley ended up with second low net in third flight.

Linda Hilburn seized first low gross in fourth flight.

Evans cards ace at GMGC

Carl Evans recorded his first-ever hole-in-one while playing a round of golf at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. Evans used a 7-iron to ace the par-3, 149-yard No. 6 hole.

Playing partner Cory Watson witnessed the feat.
