Mudcats roll past Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Ryan Bear homered and drove in four runs, Carolina snapped a six-game losing streak against Jacksonville, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Grounds.

Brett Hayes added a two-run homer for the Mudcats, who improved to 17-27 overall.

Bear connected for his first homer of the year, a three-run wallop off of Suns starter Mike Megrew (3-3), in the second inning. Dante Brinkley singled to right later in the inning to knock in Jai Miller, then Brinkley was thrown out trying to steal home to end the inning.

Hayes hit his third Double-A homer in the third inning, taking out a Megrew pitch just over the left field wall to give Carolina a 6-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Rick Vanden Hurk (2-0) won his second straight start, working five innings, permitting five hits and four runs, including a pair of two-run homers. Craig Molldrem worked three scoreless innings, with Jarrett Santos throwing the final inning.

The Mudcats concluded their five-game series against the Suns today at 12:05 p.m.
