KINSTON -- Relief pitcher Matt Howard retired the final five batters he faced and Rich Janofsky provided a two-RBI, eighth-inning single as Georgia College & State University dumped Armstrong Atlantic State 6-3 in opening-round play of the South Atlantic Regional at Grainger Stadium.
The teams endured a 40-minute delay due to overnight and morning rain in eastern North Carolina. Conditions were dry, but overcast as the stadium lights were on the entire game.
Third-seeded GCSU (45-14) faces the University of South Carolina-Aiken at 7 p.m. today. Scott Wandless threw a complete-game, seven-hitter and Ken Raborn pounded out four hits as USC-A topped Columbus State 6-1.
CSU opposed Virginia State in an elimination-round game this morning.
Georgia College & State tallied a pair of first-inning runs on an infield error and Casey Cullins' RBI single. Starter Andy Reichard (6-2) retired the first nine batters in the AASU lineup before Truman Marek, Tyler Evans and Josh Wilson all singled in the fourth.
The Pirates, ranked No. 18 nationally, forged a 2-2 tie on a sacrifice fly, wild pitch and RBI groundout.
Marek pushed AASU ahead in the fifth with an RBI infield single. Georgia College tied the game at 3-3 and seized the lead for good when Brandon Anderson plated Hans Stencil, who led off the Bobcat seventh with a double.
Janofsky's eighth-inning hit sealed GCSU's victory.
Wandless threw 147 pitches, including 89 strikes, as USC-A sent Columbus State to the losers' bracket in the six-team, double-elimination regional. He allowed one earned run, walked four and struck out five.
The Pirates collected 15 hits against three of five Columbus State pitchers. Darryl Pui, Chad Jacobsen, Josh Eachues, Ben Tankersley and Matt Spivey contributed two hits apiece.
Jarrett Coker lasted four-plus innings for the Cougars and endured the pitching loss. All six USC-A runs were earned.
Brad Linton led Columbus State with two hits in three at-bats.
