ZEBULON -- After being outscored 18 runs by Huntsville in the first three game of the series, Carolina provided some offensive firepower in a 9-2 victory Wednesday evening at Five County Stadium.

Scoreless the first two innings, the Mudcats tallied at least one run in their final six team at-bats.

Third baseman Lee Mitchell led the Mudcats with three RBI off two hits including a two-run homer to left field. Mitchell leads the team eight homers and 29 RBI on the year and is two shy of leading the Southern League in dingers. Catcher Brett Hayes and Left fielder Vince Harrison also knocked out two hits apiece for the Mudcats (16-24 overall), who ended up with 11 on the night.

Mudcats starter pitcher Jesus Delgado (3-3) overcame a shaky first couple innings before retiring 10 consecutive Stars hitters. Delgado allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out five in six innings.

Huntsville hurler Lindsay Gulin (1-1) made his second Southern League appearance of the season a little worse than the first. The 30 year-old journeyman starter lasted five innings and allowed four earned runs including a solo shot to Harrison in the fifth.

Harvey Garcia, Scott Tyler, and Scott Nester all pitched one inning in relief.

The Mudcats, winners of two straight, knocked the Stars (19-19) out of first place in the Southern League Northern Division. Carolina begins a five-game series Friday at Jacksonville. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
