County men's tennis archrivals Eastern Wayne and Charles B. Aycock are headed for another showdown after posting second-round victories in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne (16-3 overall) advanced with a 6-0 thrashing of Jacksonville White Oak on the John Allen Farfour courts at Herman Park.

Top-seeded Jared Stone, Drew Jackson, Ben Wines, Christian Pfuhl, David Benton and David Barnes each earned a singles point. The doubles matches were not contested.

C.B. Aycock dumped Oxford Webb 6-0 at Pikeville.

Blake Vail, Addison Westbrook, Ben Evans, Blake Cooper, Ben Nichols and Dylan Quinn each prevailed on the singles scene. Evans survived in three sets while his teammates lost a combined five games in the remaining 10 sets contested.

The Golden Falcons improved to 14-8.

Softball

So. Wayne dumps Havelock

DUDLEY -- Alyssa Bradshaw and Lindsey Pearsall cranked out two hits apiece and Southern Wayne dismantled Havelock 9-2 during opening-round play in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs.

The Saints picked up their county-leading 22nd victory in 26 outings and are the guest of Northeastern Coastal champion Bertie on Friday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

"I challenged my girls not to strike out and to score every inning, and they did that," said Southern Wayne head coach Brad Matthews. "The girls stepped up to the challenge."

Matthews praised the trio of Meredith Davis, Taylor Reaves and Katlyn Thornton. Davis batted 3-for-3 with an RBI. Reaves (two RBI) and Thornton (RBI) provided one hit apiece.

Morgan Davis doubled and drove in two runs.

Sophomore right-hander Lauren Darden yielded two unearned runs on four hits and notched 11 strikeouts.

Greene Central advances in 2-A

HILLSBOROUGH -- Elizabeth Webb threw a complete game shutout and Sarah Ribeiro had two hits and three RBI to lead Greene Central to a 7-0 blanking of Orange in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs on Tuesday night.

Webb allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Blair Carraway added a home run for the Rams.

Greene Central (11-11 overall) is the guest of North Pitt on Thursday.

North Lenoir waxes Franklinton

LaGRANGE -- Brittany Sanders threw a complete game and collected three hits offensively in North Lenoir's 12-0, five-inning thumping of Franklinton on Tuesday evening.

The Hawks (16-7 overall) travel to Mid-State champion Graham for a second-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoff contest later this week.

Sanders finished the night 3-for-3 and recorded nine strikeouts on the mound. Timon Jones and Emily Brown contributed two hits and two RBI apiece.

Baseball

Sowers strong in Hawks' outing

LaGRANGE -- Sthil Sowers tossed seven strong innings to lead North Lenoir to an 8-1 win over Graham in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs on Tuesday night.

North Lenoir (23-3 overall) visits Bunn on Friday.

For the Hawks, Brandon Sutton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Josh Bass was 1-for-1 with two RBI. Sowers and Bryce Grady both added run-scoring hits.

On the mound, Sowers gave up one run in seven innings, walked two and struck out five.

Parker's one-hitter paces Dawgs

PRINCETON -- Colin Parker gave Princeton seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win over Wallace-Rose Hill in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday night.

Parker allowed only one hit in the complete-game effort.

Dustin Pate was 2-for-3 with a solo home run for Princeton while Jared McLamb finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Princeton, the three-time Carolina Conference champion, visits East Columbus on Friday.

E. Columbus eliminates Rosewood

LAKE WACCAMAW -- East Columbus pushed across the game-winning in the ninth inning and nipped Rosewood 3-2 in their second-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoff game Tuesday evening.

Alex Sasser started the Gators' ninth with a lead-off walk against Rosewood reliever Cody Richards. Sasser advanced to third on a passed ball.

Facing a 2-2 count, Laython Ward hit a grounder deep into the hole between third and short. Goss Kendall scooped up the ball, but Ward beat the throw at first and Sasser scored.

Richards relieved Matt Neal, who retired 11 East Columbus batters on strikeouts and allowed two unearned runs on three hits in a seven-inning stint.

"It was a very exciting ball game to be a part of and I'm very proud of our team's heart and effort," said Rosewood head coach Josh Smith. "We just came up a little short, but my guys left everything they had out on the field."

Kendall led the Eagles with two hits and scored two runs. Senior catcher David Smeltzer doubled in a 1-for-3 effort. Richards batted 1-for-4.

Rosewood finished the year 17-6 overall.

Soccer

West Carteret ousts Warriors

MOREHEAD CITY -- West Carteret jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first 13 minutes of the game and cruised past Eastern Wayne 6-2 in their third-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoff game Tuesday evening.

Samantha Frazer got the Warriors on the scoreboard with a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, while Brandi Dean later added Eastern Wayne's second strike.

The Warriors (14-8 overall) put 13 shots on goal compared to 16 for West Carteret.

Richlands ends Hawks season

LaGRANGE -- Richlands broke open a tight 1-0 game at halftime with two late goals in a 3-0 blanking of North Lenoir on Tuesday in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A Playoffs.

North Lenoir finishes its season 14-8 overall.

Golf

Walnut Creek Ladies Association

Jewel Ivey emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Other winners were Josie Ottaviani (low gross) and Linda Cannon (low net). Mary Morris and Sue Wilson shared low-putt honors.
