Herrmann tosses four-hitter

KINSTON -- The series opener between the Carolina League's top two teams favored Southern Division leader Kinston on Monday evening at historic Grainger Stadium.

Frank Herrmann allowed four hits and one earned run in an eight-inning stint, and the K-Tribe turned back the Keys 5-2. Herrman (3-0) posted five strikeouts and did not walk a batter. He's given up just three free passes in 39 innings on the mound.

The eight-inning start was the longest by any Kinston pitcher this season.

Kinston (20-14 overall) gave Herrmann all the run support he needed when they batted around in the fifth inning. RBI sacrifice flies by Wes Hodges and Chris Gimenez drove in two runs in the fifth. An RBI triple by John Drennen drove in another as Kinston scored three in the frame to go up 5-1.

Kinston's Jerad Head was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Jose Constanza, Max Ramirez and Hodges each had two hits.

The teams continue their three-game series tonight at 7 o'clock. David Huff (3-2, 1.89 ERA) is set to start for the K-Tribe.
