BARCO -- Freshman Brandi Dean collected her second game-winning goal in the postseason and Eastern Wayne turned back Currituck County 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Dean scored in the 60th minute and catapulted the Warriors (14-7 overall) into the third round of the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association women's soccer playoffs. Eastern Wayne will entertain West Carteret at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Currituck finished the year 14-9 overall.

Emily Payne tallied the Knights' lone goal in the 10th minute. Carol Reinier tallied the equalizer in the 23rd minute when Kasie Edwards' shot deflected off her and into goal.

The teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.

Senior Sam Frazer, who missed the Warriors' opening-round game against D.H. Conley, pushed the ball forward to Dean. Facing a one-on-one opportunity against the Knight keeper, Dean easily put away the game-winning mark.

Eastern Wayne owned a 16-7 edge in shots on goal. Each team attempted three corner kicks.

Warrior keeper Danielle Daniel recorded three saves.

Hawks pull off

second-round upset

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Jordam Hudson scored twice to help propel the Hawks to a 3-2 second-round upset over Croatan in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A playoffs on Friday night.

Sasha Holeman tallied the other strike for the Hawks, who face either Richlands or First Flight in third-round action Tuesday.

Bogles record

great outings at A&T

GREENSBORO -- Princeton's Jania Bogle seized individual state titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and Gerrell Bogle emerged victorious in the triple jump during the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association track and field championships on Friday afternoon.

Jania ran wind-aided times of 12.35 seconds in the 100 and 25.99 in the 200. She just missed winning the long jump, finishing at least half a foot behind an East Columbus competitor in the long jump.

Teammate C.C. Sanders grabbed seventh place in the high jump.

The Dawgs, who took third in the 400 relay, ended up a distant second behind Topsail in the team competition.

Joule Breedlove of Swain County received MVP honors after setting a new 1-A meet record in the triple jump (38-1 1/4). She finished second in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

On the boys' side, Gerrell recorded a distance of 45 feet, 11/4 inches in the triple jump and placed eighth overall in the 300 hurdles. Teammate Tyrone Smith captured seventh in the triple jump.

Rosewood's Chris Holmes seized sixth place in the triple jump.

Philip Curley, from the N.C. School of Science and Math, prevailed in three individual events and earned MVP honors. He helped lead the Unicorns to their first-ever team championship as a member of the NCHSAA.
