Wayne Country Day wins first title in 20 years

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day waited two decades to add another Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference baseball championship to its trophy case.

Now the Chargers have a another trophy after sweeping Monday's season-ending CPIC tournament on the Fleming Stadium diamond. WCDS upended fourth-seeded Faith Christian-Rocky Mount 7-1 and blitzed archrival Greenfield 9-0 in the nightcap.

"Great team ball from everyone," said WCDS coach Michael Taylor. "Everyone contributed, defensively and offensively. "It was just a well played two ball games."

Kyle Pender (5-1) threw six strong innings and the Chargers (19-4) earned their fourth win over Faith Christian this season. Pender allowed one run on three hits to go along with two strikeouts and three walks.

At the plate Travis Davis finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Ryan Ford went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Trent Langston drove in two runs for the Chargers.

Later in the evening, Davis threw a complete-game five-hitter against Greenfield. Davis (9-1) struck out five and walked one.

Six different WCDS players contributed at least one RBI in the nine-run outing. Kevin Herring finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Ford also tallied three hits in four at-bats.

Langston added two hits and two RBI. Sam Steed, Cory Roberts and Pender all added a hit and an RBI for the Chargers.
