Wayne Country Day clinches first CPIC baseball title in 20 years

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day clinched its first Coastal Plains Independent Conference title in 20 years by defeating Faith Christian of Rocky Mount 11-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Travis Davis did it all for the Chargers -- on the mound and at the plate -- as he allowed one run (none earned) in six innings, walked two and struck out two to pick up the win. At the plate, Davis finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Jack Scott added two hits and an RBI for the Chargers while Ryan Ford had a hit and two RBIs.

On the base paths, the Chargers swiped five bags against Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.

The victory improves WCDS to 17-4 (5-1 CPIC) and next plays on Monday at Fleming Stadium in the conference tournament.

Eagles advances

to CCC championship

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian reached the championship game of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament with a 10-0 victory over Community Christian on Thursday afternoon.

Adam Brannan and Doug Johnson combined on the shutout. Brannan threw three innings to pick up the win, allowing one hit and one walk with for strike outs.

Brannan had three hits and four RBIs at the plate to lead the Eagles while Jeremy Jefferson and T.A. Brannan both had a hit and two RBIs.

Wayne Christian moves to 13-4 (7-0) and next takes on Northwood Temple in the championship game Saturday at Cape Fear.

Wayne Christian falls

to Cape Fear

Wayne Christian suffered a tough 12-2 loss to Cape Fear Christian on Thursday afternoon.

Cynthia Burroughs took the loss while striking out four.

Burroughs, Charity Wright and Reagan Hinton all added three hits to lead the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (12-4) will get a first round bye Tuesday and will play in the CCC conference tournament next Thursday. The Eagles need a win to have a rematch on Friday against Cape Fear.

Greene Central

gets by Farmville

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central push a run across in the seventh inning to defeat Farmville Central 4-3 on Thursday afternoon in Eastern Plain 2-A Conference action.

Elizabeth Webb pitched four perfect innings of relief to pick up the win while strike out five.

Stacey Wade and Blair Carraway both finished 2-for-4 for the Rams while Ashley Oaks and Jessica Moore both added a hit and a RBI.

Greene Central evens its overall record at to 10-10 (4-3 EPC) and next host North Lenoir on May 8.

Tennis

WCDS easily

defeats Kerr-Vance

Wayne Country Day took all six singles matches against Kerr-Vance Academy took pick up a 8-1 win on Thursday afternoon on the Wayne Community College courts.

Russell Turner, David Wilson, Byron Bryan, Kevin Martel, George Mayo and Luxman Srikantha all picked up singles victories for the Chargers.

The tandems of Bryan-Wilson and Mayo-Srikantha were victorious in doubles play.

In exhibition play, Thomas Yarboro/Tanner Pate combined to defeat Josh Adkins-Dillon Ellington 8-7.

WCDS next travels to Greenfield School in Wilson on May 12 in the CPIC tournament.

Vail captures

ECC singles crown

SNOW HILL -- Charles B. Aycock freshman Blake Vail captured the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference singles title by defeating teammate Addison Westbrook 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday afternoon.

In the doubles championship, Eastern Wayne's duo of Jared Stone-Drew Jackson defeated Drew Calvert-Zach Thomas of Wilson Hunt 6-3, 6-1.

Greene Central

get past Farmville

SNOW HILL -- With the aid of a pair of RBIs from Zach Chase and Jasper Jones, Greene Central defeated Farmville Central 7-5 on Thursday in Eastern Plain Conference action.

Chase finished 2-for-3 with a triple while Jasper Jones was 1-for-3.

Jonathan Nethercut picked up the victory on the mound for the Rams.

Greene Central improves to 9-11 overall (3-4 EPC) and next hosts North Lenoir on May 8.

Middle schools

Princeton softball 6, Four Oaks 8 -- Princeton held a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when Four Oaks struck for six runs. Princeton came back to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning before Four Oaks won it in walk-off fashion to pull off the win. Nicole Melvin finished 3-for-4 for Princeton while Hannah Woodard and Traci Bridgers were both 2-for-4. Reandy Hearn, Megan Gerrell, Ashleigh Mayes and Keely Myers all had a one hit apiece. Bridgers finished with six strikeouts on the mound.

Dixie Youth Majors

The Wayne County Falcons improved to 6-0 with a win over Seymour Johnson Thursday evening. Tyler Rowe, Sean Ruffin, Blake Grady and Hunter Dean combined on a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Steven Jessee and Jared Rozzi collected 3 hits each. Brett Bartlett, Tyler Rowe, Sean Ruffin, and Nick Leggett added 2 hits apiece while Jake Wiser, Dylan Mitchell, K.J. Reavers, Blake Grady, Kaelin Johnson, and Hunter McCoy got one hit each.

Dixie Youth Minors

Wayne Country Day defeated St. Mary's 9-3 on Thursday. Cody Neal struck out 13 in five innings of work to pick up the win. Neal and Blake Mayo both added three hits for Wayne Country Day while Dare Uzzell had two hits. Julian Mitchell, Ryan Kelly and Cole Newsome all tallied one hit apiece. The victory improves Wayne Country Day to 2-2.
