FAYETTEVILLE -- Matt Davis fashioned an 18-hole round of 69 and emerged the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference player of the year during Thursday afternoon's season-ending golf meet at Kings Grant Country Club.

Davis and his Eagle teammates claimed their fifth consecutive CCC crown with a season-low, four-player total of 299. Clark Rose and fellow first-team, all-CCC selection Eric Williams posted scores of 74 and 78, respectively. Andrew Radford concluded the Eagles' title run with a 78, also.

Hayden Gardner and Taylor Gardner fired rounds of 81 and 92, respectively.

Wayne Christian bested runner-up Durham Cresset Christian by seven strokes in their final meeting, and 40 strokes overall including regular-season play. Erwin Cape Fear Christian finished third with a 318, followed by Community Christian (342), Trinity Academy-Raleigh (371) and Fayetteville Northwood Temple (400).

The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, return to action in the state tournament May 14-15 at Pinehurst. Wayne Christian won the 2005 state championship.

"We've been ranked No. 1 in the state for the past three years and have only won the title once," said Eagles head coach Clarence Rose, who is assisted by Hal Davis. "I'm looking for that second state championship, and I think we have a good shot at it."
