Trojan baseball keeps moving up

MOUNT OLIVE -- On the strength of winning the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament over the weekend, Mount Olive jumped six places to No. 12 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 Poll, it was announced Monday. The Trojans are 26-3 in their last 29 games, dating back to March 10.

Mount Olive (44-11 overall) posted a 4-0 record at the CVAC tournament, outscoring its four opponents 48-11. The Trojans opened tournament play with a 16-0 win over Limestone and sealed its second consecutive title Sunday with a 10-3 victory over Anderson in the championship game.

CLEMMONS -- In a second round that saw seven of the nine teams play within five shots of each other, Mount Olive slipped into a tie for eighth place at the 2007 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's golf tournament Monday at Salem Glen Golf and Country Club.

Mount Olive's second-round score was only one stroke higher than its first-round total, but the Trojans find themselves tied with St. Andrews at 304-305--609.

Jonathan Greene shot his second consecutive 75 on the par-71 course to tie for 16th out of 48 golfers with a 150. Scott Woodard (74-78--152) is tied for 21st, while fellow freshman Johan Hagsund (77-76--153) is one shot back, tied for 26th. Chris Bitzenhofer (80-76--156) is tied for 32nd and Mick Moberg (78-79--157) is tied for 34th.

For the women, Kristin Moberg moved into the top 10 with a second-round 79, but Mount Olive slipped a spot to sixth place.

Moberg has a two-round total of 82-79--161 to land in 10th place after 36 holes. Kristen Freeman, who established a personal best with a 77 Sunday, carded an 85 Monday and is tied for 11th out of 34 golfers with a 162.
