Wolfe scores, dishes out an assist in Rosewood victory

Kelsey Wolfe tallied one goal and added an assist in Rosewood's 3-0 conquest of county and Classes 1-A/2-A Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference foe Spring Creek on Thursday evening.

Wolfe gave the Eagles a 1-0 halftime lead on Francesca Vercelea-Zara's assist.

Rachel McCormick and Kathryn Seymour notched second-half goals on assists from Alex Lea and Wolfe, respectively.

Rosewood (6-4 overall) improved to 3-2 against C/EPC opposition and entertains Tarboro on Monday. Game time is 6 p.m. at Branch Pope Field.

The Gators (0-7, 0-6 C/EPC) entertain Princeton on April 25.

North Lenoir

posts shutout

LaGRANGE -- Keepers Meghan Johnson and Ra'Nelle Dudley combined for the shutout in goal as North Lenoir stopped Rosewood 3-0 on the Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A scene.

Sasha Holeman provided two goals and Lauren Hudson added one for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (9-6 overall) remained unbeaten in six C/EPC contests and visits North Johnston on Monday.

Wayne Christian

drills Cape Fear

Adam Brannan threw a one-hitter as Wayne Christian hammered Cape Fear Christian 13-3 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Brannan fanned six Cape Fear batters and walked five in a contest shortened to six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Brannan added a hit and two RBI offensively for the Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll.

Michael Johson paced Wayne Christian's offense with two hits and drove in one run. Dante Arthur contributed a hit and supplied a team-leading three RBI.

The Eagles (10-3 overall) remained unbeaten in four CCC outings heading into today's home game against Johnston Christian.

Kinston shuts

down Goldsboro

Goldsboro collected three hits in a 20-0, non-conference loss against Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

Eric McLean, Darrell Williams and V.A. Dance provided one hit apiece.

Dance took the pitching loss.

Goldsboro (0-15 overall) entertains North Pitt at 5 p.m. today.

Eastern Wayne senior Jared Stone survived a first-set tiebreaker and helped the Warriors dispatch Wilson Beddingfield 9-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Stone edged Justin Webb 7-6 (4), 6-2 at the No. 1 slot. Teammates Drew Jackson, Ben Wines, Christian Pfuhl, David Benton and Eric Barnes each provided a straight-set decision.

Stone-Jackson, Wines-Ken Lam and Benton-Barnes each earned a doubles point.

The Warriors (14-2 overall, 8-0 ECC) collected their 17th consecutive league victory heading into next Tuesday's match at conference rival C.B. Aycock.

Golden Falcons

blitz Wilson Hunt

WILSON -- C.B. Aycock pulled out two tiebreakers and shut out Wilson Hunt 9-0 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons, directed by first-year head coach Kevin Coghill, clinched a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.

Fourth-seeded Blake Cooper dropped an opening-set tiebreaker to the Bruins' Justin Tew, but rebounded for a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-8 win. The No. 1 doubles of Blake Vail-Addison Westbrook edged the Warriors' Drew Calvert-Zach Thomas 9-8 (5).

Vail, Westbrook, Ben Evans, Ben Nichols and Dylan Quinn each secured a straight-win in singles. Evans-Quinn and Cooper-Nichols picked up a doubles point apiece.

Greene Central

dumps N. Lenoir

SNOW HILL -- First-year starters James Kersey and Andrew Harrison combined to lose just four games in singles play, and Greene Central blitzed Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Lenoir 9-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Kersey and Harrison posted identical 6-0, 6-2 wins on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts. Teammates Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo, Trey Cash and Spencer Dail each earned a straight-set singles point, also.

Moore-Nimmo, Dail-Cash and Perry-Harrison accounted for the Rams' doubles points.

"We did a good job regrouping from our loss yesterday (to C.B. Aycock)," said Rams head coach Brad Sauls. "We played much better than the first time we played against North Lenoir. They are a patient team and make you hit a lot of balls."

Greene Central (11-5 overall, 3-2 EPC) entertains North Pitt on Monday.

North Johnston

beats S. Creek

KENLY -- North Johnston prevailed in six of nine matches and handed Spring Creek a 6-3 loss in Carolina 1-A Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Brandon Strickland and Alex Dunmire each recorded a singles victory for the Gators. Strickland-Daniel Richter scored a doubles point.

Spring Creek (1-8 overall, 1-2 Carolina) travels to Ayden-Grifton on Monday.

C.B. Aycock wins

four-team match

MACCLESFIELD -- Will Vinson earned medalist honors with a 77 and led Charles B. Aycock to a four-team, non-conference victory at Maccripine Country Club.

The Golden Falcons edged host SouthWest Edgecombe 320-326. C.B. Aycock's four-player total included 18-hole rounds of 78 from Austin Forrest, 81 from Jordan Elmore and 84 from Charles Cranford.

Roanoke Rapids finished one stroke behind SWE, while Rocky Mount carded a 342.

turns back Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Eastern Wayne prevailed in five of six contested singles matches and cruised past Spring Creek 7-2.

The Warriors received singles wins from Charley Umstead, Thomas Jackson, Timothy Parker, Mike Ames and Imran Rauf. Jackson-Parker and Ames-Rauf also triumphed in doubles.

Aaron Dunmire secured the Gators' lone singles point and teamed with Douglas Boltinhouse for a victory at No. 1 doubles.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 11, Rosewood 1 -- Aaron Champion emerged the winning pitcher for the Cobras on Thursday afternoon. Allen Walker and John Taylor provided three hits apiece, while Champion and Travis Musselman each supplied to hits. Norwayne rose to 10-0 and visits Mount Olive next Monday.

Grantham softball 7, Eastern Wayne 2 -- Madison Davis posted 11 strikeouts and yielded two hits in a complete-game effort on Thursday afternoon. Davis batted 2-for-3 with a home run, while Taylor Hood added two singles. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 overall and entertains Greenwood on Monday.

Brogden baseball 16, Dillard 5 -- Jesus Sandoval and Jarmar Holmes were the Rams' leading hitters. Thomas Hinnant threw a two-hitter and struck out seven Tiger batters. Brogden (4-6 overall) is the guest of Rosewood on Monday.

Princeton 6, Meadow 3 -- Traci Bridgers delivered three hits on offense and posted 14 strikeouts in the pitcher's circle. Reandy Hearn, Megan Gerrell and Keely Myers had two hits apiece for the Dawgs. Hannah Woodard, Nicole Melvin, Megan Adams and Summer Sasser contributed to the win.

Grantham baseball 11, Spring Creek 6 -- Grantham beat Spring Creek behind a very good defensive effort and strong pitching. Jeremy Taylor pitched six innings and allowed six runs on two hits and struck out four to pick up the win. Mel Winn was 2-for-4 with a triple for Grantham while Taylor Brock and Tyler Reedy finished 3-for-4. Grantham improved to 5-4 overall.

Eastern Wayne soccer 5, Grantham 0 -- Eastern Wayne improved to 3-0 overall by blanking Grantham (0-3) behind two goals by Grace Russo. Maegan MacAleese, Pamela Diaz and Lauren Breindel all added a goal while Caroline Roth had two assists. Eastern Wayne returns to the field April 25 when they host Norwayne while Grantham travels to Norwayne on May 2.

Spring Creek softball 11, Grantham 10 (8 inn.) -- Elizabeth Edwards provided the game-winning hit and earned the mound victory for the Gators. Brittany Collier batted 5-for-5 with one single, two doubles and two triples; and accounted for six runs. Miranda Hill contributed a single and double. Spring Creek (5-4 overall) remained unbeaten in Division II play at 3-0.

Four Oaks softball 5, Princeton 1 -- Despite pounding out eight hits, Princeton could only muster one run against Four Oaks on Wednesday afternoon. Nicole Melvin finished 3-for-4 with a double for Princeton. Teammates Hannah Woodard, Megan Gerrell, Traci Bridgers, Keely Myers and Summer Sasser recorded one hit apiece.
