ECC soccer: Warrior women blitz Kinston 8-0

KINSTON -- Three Eastern Wayne players combined for six goals in an 8-0 shutout over Kinston on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference women's soccer scene Tuesday evening.

Samantha Frazer, Natalie Taylor and Kelsey Edwards notched two goals apiece for the Warriors, who improved to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in the ECC. Taylor assisted on both of Frazer's goals in the 10th and 20th minutes.

Taylor scored in the 29th and 45 minutes, while Edwards found the back of the net in the 31st and 33rd minutes. Kelsey Griffith assisted on Edwards' first goal as Eastern Wayne built a 5-0 lead at halftime.

Griffith and Sarah Gambella, who converted a penalty kick, provided the Warriors' second half scoring. Gambella and Frazer have combined for four PKs in Eastern Wayne's last three ECC contests.

The Warriors owned a decisive 30-3 edge in shots on goal and 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Keeper Brittany Spence claimed her second shutout in her last three starts in goal.

Eastern Wayne begins the second half of its ECC schedule Thursday at Southern Wayne. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

No. 2 Chargers

AHOSKIE -- Barton College signee Georgia Crow supplied five goals and two assists during Wayne Country Day's 7-2 victory over Ridgecroft in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference action.

Georgia Tanner and Kim Martel provided one goal apiece for the Chargers, who improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in CPIC play. Martel dished out an assist, while Virginia Best passed out three assists.

Keeper Ellen Elmore recorded eight saves in goal.

Wayne Country Day, which dropped to No. 2 in this week's N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association poll, entertains Greenfield at 4 p.m. Thursday.

earns hat trick

DUDLEY -- Amanda Schlaeppi notched a hat trick (three goals) and dished out an assist as Charles B. Aycock dumped county rival Southern Wayne 11-0 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match.

Erin Medford scored twice for the Golden Falcons, who snapped a four-match skid. Nida Waheed, Samantha Whitworth, Caroline Schlaeppi, Jessica Price, Alicia Sodoma and Lizzie Sodoma delivered one goal apiece.

Caroline Schlaeppi collected a team-high two assists. Mallory Peacock and Courtney Sheeks each added an assist.

Sheeks and Patrice Pittman combined for four saves and the shutout in goal.

C.B. Aycock (6-6-1 overall, 3-2 ECC) entertains Clayton today.

Kosuda's goal

WILSON -- Kaitlyn Kosuda notched the game-winning goal three minutes into the first overtime session and Wayne Christian upended Community Christian 1-0 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Brooke Norris assisted Kosuda on the game-winning goal.

The Eagles (3-5-1 overall) remained perfect in three CCC outings and travel to Hobgood Academy on Thursday.

in for Warriors

KINSTON -- Sophomore John Wooten slugged a two-run home run and earned the pitching win in Eastern Wayne's 14-1 victory over Kinston in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference ranks Tuesday evening.

Wooten finished with one hit in four plate appearances. The right-hander yielded two hits and struck out eight Viking batters in a six-inning stint. Corey Harr tossed one inning of one-hit relief.

Tyler Wicks doubled and finished 4-for-4 with two RBI in the seven-inning affair. Lead-off batter Chad Gurley hit 3-for-5, while Walker Gourley tripled and drove in four runs during a 2-for-4 effort.

Taylor Sutton doubled twice and plated two runs in a 3-for-4 outing. Nolan Lancaster (RBI) and Jose Ponce contributed two hits apiece.

Eastern Wayne (6-8 overall, 4-1 ECC) begins second-half conference play Thursday at Southern Wayne. Game time is 5 p.m.

Kyle Pender fired a no-hitter and state-ranked Wayne Country Day turned back Greenville Christian 5-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

Pender struck out six and walked four in a complete-game effort.

Cameron Ford and Ryan Ford each doubled for the Chargers, who claimed their eighth consecutive win. The duo combined for four RBI.

Wayne Country Day, ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, carry an 11-1 record into Thursday's home game against Faith Christian-Rocky Mount.

Rosewood rolls

past Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Taylor Allen and Cody Richards each cranked out a pair of hits in Rosewood's 13-3, Carolina 1-A Conference victory over county rival Spring Creek.

Matt Neal, David Smeltzer, Garrett Howell and Chris Hare each added a hit for the Eagles.

Allen claimed the pitching win. The right-hander posted nine strikeouts and scattered six hits in five-plus innings. Richards provided one-plus inning of four-strikeout relief.

The teams left a combined 17 runners on base.

Rosewood (8-3 overall, 2-1 Carolina) puts its modest two-game win streak on the line at home Thursday against North Duplin.

Spring Creek, which entered the game ranked No. 9 in the latest ImpactBaseball.com 1-A poll, fell to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in league play heading into today's home game with North Johnston.

upends A.-Grifton

CALYPSO -- Billy Mello doubled and drove in three runs as North Duplin stopped Ayden-Grifton 8-3 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Mello finished with four hits in four at-bats for the Rebels, who climbed to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Trea Beavers (RBI), Taylor Coates, Daniel Howell and Brad Rhodes (RBI) collected two hits apiece. Rock Bennett and Ryan Killette (RBI) each batted 1-for-3.

Bennett threw a complete-game seven-hitter on the mound and struck out nine Ayden-Grifton batters. The Chargers parlayed those hits and three walks into three earned runs.

North Duplin visits Rosewood on Thursday, while Ayden-Grifton (6-5, 1-2 Carolina) plays host to Princeton today.

Doug Johnson tossed a complete-game shutout and state-ranked Wayne Christian throttled Trinity Christian-Greenville 12-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson recorded five strikeouts and scattered three hits in the non-conference contest, which was shortened to 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Johnson helped his cause with two hits and two RBI on offense.

Adam Brannan and Kyle Harrell each supplied two hits and two RBI. Travis Thomas (RBI) contributed two hits. Dante Arthur and T.A. Brannan each doubled, while Jeremy Jefferson tripled.

Wayne Christian, ranked No. 3 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, improved to 7-2 overall. The Eagles entertain Norlina Christian on Thursday.

Princeton beats

archrival Panthers

PRINCETON -- Princeton seized sole possession of first place in the Carolina 1-A Conference with a 15-4, five-inning decision over county archrival North Johnston.

Ryan Daughtry paced the Dawgs with three hits and two RBI in four at-bats. Daniel Gerrell doubled, tripled and drove in five runs. Adam Nethercutt added two hits in two plate appearances.

Bulldog right-hander Chris Hinton improved to 4-1 in the complete-game win.

Matt Narron provided a two-run homer for the Panthers.

Princeton (8-4 overall, 3-0 Carolina) visits Ayden-Grifton today, while North Johnston (8-3, 2-1) is the guest of Spring Creek.

Eric McLean pounded out two hits in Goldsboro's 27-2 loss against Eastern Plains 2-A rival Greene Central on Tuesday evening. Donald Lewis added one hit for the Cougars.

LaGRANGE -- Bryce Grady slapped a first-inning, two-run home and state-ranked North Lenoir spanked Tarboro High 12-2 in a five-inning, Eastern Plains 2-A Conference game Tuesday.

John Alphin led the Hawks with three hits, including a double, and two RBI. East Carolina signee Sthil Sowers doubled. Teammates Brandon Sutton, Taylor Ginn, Andrew Manning, C.C. Croom and George Walters contributed one hit apiece. Dewitt Pope picked up his second mound win of the season. The right-hander struck out eight and allowed two earned runs on six hits.

North Lenoir (11-1 overall, 2-0 EPC) carries its 11-game win streak to North Pitt on Thursday. Tarboro (5-6, 1-1 EPC) returns home to face Greene Central today.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Right-hander Haile Meadows recorded 11 strikeouts and Rosewood cruised past Spring Creek 13-0 in their Carolina 1-A Conference battle Tuesday evening.

Meadows, Courtney Hill and Jessica Price contributed three hits apiece for the Rebels. Bruton and Hall chipped in two hits apiece. Aubrey Reinhard and Missy Bailey added one hit apiece.

Casey Coor led the Gators' offense with two hits. Kristin Smith doubled, while Renee Duvall and Paula Webber provided one hit apiece.

Rosewood (6-7 overall, 2-1 Carolina) began the week with a 7-0 victory at state-ranked Union. Price led the Eagles with three hits in the non-conference road win.

Lyddia Hirschy (RBI), Casey Mitchell (RBI) and Lindsey Frederick rapped out two hits each. Carrie Adams batted 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Caitlin Turner went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Meghan Pittman and Allison Sutton contributed one hit apiece.

Freshman right-hander Lani Fricks suffered the mound loss.

Eastern Wayne (0-12 overall, 0-5 ECC) travels to state-ranked Southern Wayne on Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Bulldogs pull

off Carolina stunner

PRINCETON -- Sarah Eonta batted 2-for-3 and Princeton stunned county archrival North Johnston 4-1 in their Carolina 1-A Conference encounter Tuesday afternoon.

April Keene and Ashley Braswell each added hit for the Dawgs, who rose to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Panthers, the reigning Carolina champions, dropped to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Keene threw a complete game and struck out one.

Sarah Wood led North Johnston with two hits in three at-bats. Jessica Narron suffered the mound loss despite four strikeouts in a five-inning stint.

Princeton travels to Ayden-Grifton today.

blitzes Vikings

TARBORO -- Conner Jordan tossed a shutout and North Lenoir blitzed Tarboro High 17-0 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Tuesday.

Kayla Letchworth led the Hawks with a 4-for-4, three-RBI effort. Brittany Sanders added three hits and three RBI. Jordan batted 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Timon Jones contributed two hits and two RBI.

North Lenoir (9-3 overall, 2-0 EPC) plays host to North Pitt, the defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A champion, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne won all four contested matches and received five forfeits in a 9-0, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory over short-handed Kinston on Tuesday afternoon.

The Vikings had just three players present for the match.

Top-seeded Jared Stone, Drew Jackson and Ben Wines each prevailed in singles play. Stone needed a third-set tiebreaker to beat Ethan Bowen 4-6, 6-4, 10-2.

Stone-Jackson claimed the Warriors' lone doubles point.

Eastern Wayne (8-2, 5-0 ECC) picked up their 14th consecutive league victory and 26th win overall in their last 28 ECC matches. The Warriors step outside conference play for a home match today against J.H. Rose.

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day picked up a 7-2 win over Greenfield on Monday.

Top seed Tanner Pate led the attack for the Chargers with an 8-1 decision over the Knights' Josh Johnstone. Brandon Davis, Jay Grisette and Trent Proimos also recorded pro-set (eight-game) victories.

The Chargers also took all three doubles matches.
