Prep roundup: Saints softball team now 13-1

WILSON -- Jordan Hill cranked out a pair of two-out RBI hits and Southern Wayne nipped Wilson Hunt 2-1 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference game Friday afternoon.

Hill, who finished the day 3-for-3 with two RBI, laced a two-out, two-strike RBI single in the second inning. She added a two-out base hit in the seventh, which scored Morgan Davis, who led off the inning with a hit.

"I was proud of Jordan at the plate," said Saints head coach Brad Matthews. "She got the job done for us."

And it kept Southern Wayne on pace for its first-ever, regular-season conference title in the program's fast-pitch era. The Saints (13-1 overall) remained tied with county rival Charles B. Aycock atop the ECC standings at 4-0. The teams meet Tuesday in Dudley.

Alyssa Bradshaw, Lynn Grantham, Lindsey Pearsall, Rachel Reynolds and winning pitcher Lauren Darden each collected a hit off Hunt right-hander Brittany Farmer. Farmer walked one and struck out three Southern Wayne batters en route to her second ECC loss of the season.

Darden scattered four hits in a complete-game effort and fanned seven Warrior batters. The right-hander walked three and yielded an earned run as the Saints picked up their program-best seventh consecutive win under Matthews' guidance.

Casey Strickland supplied Hunt's lone RBI.

Jordan hurls

two-hit shutout

Emily Jordan scattered two hits in a complete-game effort and state-ranked C.B. Aycock blanked county rival Eastern Wayne 5-0 on Friday afternoon.

Jordan (5-1) faced two batters over the minimum (21) for a seven-inning game and fanned six Warriors. C.B. Aycock (8-4 overall) remained unbeaten in four Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference contests and collected its 53rd victory in 56 tries against league opposition since 2003.

Leiren Tillman and senior catcher Rusti Talton each supplied an RBI triple for the Golden Falcons, ranked No. 6 in the latest N.C. Fast-pitch Softball Coaches Association 3-A poll. Yolanda Pitt batted 1-for-1 and scored a run, while Jasmine Dobbin doubled in a 1-for-3 effort.

Eastern Wayne's Lani Fricks yielded five hits, struck out three and walked three en route to the complete game.

C.B. Aycock visits county rival Southern Wayne next Tuesday with first place in the ECC at stake. Game time is 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the Warriors (0-11, 0-4 ECC) conclude first-half conference play at Kinston.

Defending 2-A

champs cruise

BETHEL -- North Pitt, the defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A champion, dealt Greene Central a 4-0 loss in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

Panther right-hander Faith Sutton emerged the winning pitcher.

The Rams' Jessica Moore endured the mound loss.

Greene Central (0-1 EPC) dropped to 4-6 overall.

Lady Gators

lose at A-G

The Lady Gators saw their record slip to 0-9 this season (0-2 Carolina 1-A Conference) with a 13-2 loss at Ayden-Grifton on Friday.

Kristen Smith led Spring Creek with two doubles, Paula Webber had a hit and an RBI, and Casey Coor also drove in a run.

Coor and Webber split the pitching duties and each struck out one batter.

Spring Creek will host Rosewood on Tuesday.

North Lenoir

dumps F. Central

LaGRANGE -- Brittany Sanders threw a complete-game one-hitter and provided two hits offensively in North Lenoir's 2-0 triumph over Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival Farmville Central.

Sanders walked one and struck out seven Jaguar batters.

Kayla Sutton, Bethany Fillipeli and Emily Brown provided one hit apiece for the Hawks.

North Lenoir (9-3 overall, 1-0 EPC) travels to Tarboro on Tuesday.

Baseball

Chargers rout

Kerr Vance

Travis Davis went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs plus threw five strong innings on the mound as Wayne Country Day thumped visiting Kerr Vance 15-2 in five innings on Friday afternoon.

The Chargers improved to 9-1 overall with the victory and now sit alone atop the CIPC with a 2-0 mark. Kerr Vance and Greenfield are tied for second at 1-1.

Davis improved to 3-1 as he struck out six and walked none while giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Kerr Vance threw five difference pitchers in four innings, but none proved too effective as Wayne Country Day scored four times in each of the first and second innings, plated two more in the second and put the game out of reach with five runs in the fourth. Kerr Vance got its only two runs on a two-run single by Will Bowen in the second inning.

Also for the Chargers, Ryan Ford went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Kevin Herring was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Trent Langston had a hit and two RBIs, Kyle Pender had a pair of hits, and Cameron Ford finished with one hit.

Wayne Country Day is back in action Monday as the Chargers play a 4 p.m. game at Fayettville Academy.

Gators fall

at Ayden-Grifton

The Gators fell to 0-2 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 7-3 loss at Ayden-Grifton on Friday.

Timothy Rogers gave up just one hit in five innings for the Gators (7-4). He struck out five and allowed two unearned runs. Anthony Brogden took the loss in relief.

Lee Coates had a double and scored a run for the Gators, Ray Grady had a double, Alex Casey had a hit and scored a run, and Josh Gammon and Lucas Potter had one hit each.

Spring Creek returns home Monday with a 4:30 p.m. non-conference game against Wayne Christian.

Greene Central

drops EPC opener

SNOW HILL -- Ethan Powell contributed three hits in North Pitt's 4-0 conquest of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Greene Central on the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex diamond Friday evening.

The Panthers collected nine hits off the Rams, who fell to 3-8 overall. Michael Speedy suffered the mound loss.

Alex Brann picked up two of Greene Central's three hits off North Pitt right-hander Cameron Rollins, who threw a complete game.

The Rams are the guests of Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Wilson Hunt defeat

visiting Saints

Wilson Hunt handed Southern Wayne its second loss in Eastern Carolina Conference play as the Warriors won 7-3 on Friday night.

Michael Douglas (2-1) suffered the loss by allowing seven runs on 11 hits, walked one and struck out two in five innings.

Garrett Barfield had an RBI single, Chris Massey recorded a hit and a run score while Sterling Grice had a double for the Southern Wayne.

The Saints falls to 5-7 (2-2 ECC) and will next host Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday.

Warriors' Dean

scores lone goal

Brandi Dean tallied Eastern Wayne's lone goal in a 1-0 decision over county archrival C.B. Aycock in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Warriors fired 10 shots on goal.

Eastern Wayne keeper Emily Crawford recorded three saves.

The Warriors (4-3 overall, 1-0 ECC) are the guests of Kinston on Tuesday.

W. Country Day

nips Eastern Wayne

Wayne Country Day triumphed at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, and edged Eastern Wayne 5-4 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

The No. 1 tandem of Tanner Pate-Jay Grisette stopped the Warriors' Will Kastner-Charlie Umstead 8-6. The No. 2 duo of Thomas Elmore-Brandon Davis turned back Tim Parker-Mike Gaines 8-2.

Pate, Elmore and Grisette each earned a singles point for the Chargers.

Eastern Wayne received singles wins from Parker, Thomas Jackson and Imran Rauf. Jackson-Rauf prevailed 8-0 in their No. 3 doubles match.

Wayne Country Day (1-1 overall) visits Greenfield on Monday.
