Eagles claim PK shootout over Cape Fear Christian

Wayne Christian converted three penalty kicks and doubled up Cape Fear Christian Academy 4-2 in their Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference battle Thursday afternoon.

Devan Isenhower provided the Eagles' lone goal in regulation.

Two overtime sessions resulted in a scoreless tie and the teams entered the PK phase. Isenhower, Brooke Norris and Shayna Yeager supplied one goal apiece for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (2-4-1 overall) remained unbeaten in two CCC outings.

lead Hawks' charge

PIKEVILLE -- Lindsey Fulton provided two goals and Jordan Hudson added a single goal in North Lenoir's 3-2, non-conference victory over Charles B. Aycock on Thursday afternoon.

Lizzie Sodoma emerged the Golden Falcons' lone scorer with a first-half goal and a second-half penalty kick. Caroline Schlaeppi dished out an assist.

Aycock keeper Courtney Sheeks recorded eight saves.

The Golden Falcons (5-4-1 overall) travel to county archrival Eastern Wayne today. North Lenoir (6-6) entertains Tarboro in a Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference match Monday.

White, Ulmer lead

Eastern Wayne

KINSTON -- Will White and Dwight Ulmer emerged double winners, and helped Eastern Wayne prevail in a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Kinston.

White won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, while Ulmer raced to first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The duo helped the Warriors amass 78 points, compared to 52 for runner-up and county rival C.B. Aycock.

Host Kinston was third with 41 points.

Kenyatta Bryant won the long jump (19 feet, 6 inches) for the Warriors, who won just one of four contested relays.

Distance runners Carson Sasser and Nik Frederick combined for three individual victories for C.B. Aycock. Sasser prevailed in the 1,600- and 800-meter runs, while Frederick captured the 3,200.

Fellow Golden Falcon Daniel Pennington seized the 400 by three-tenths of a second over the Warriors' Lamar Davis, and grabbed first in the high jump (5-8). Aycock triumphed in the 3,200- and 1,600-meter relays.

Kinston took three field events and the 800 relay.

The Warriors and Golden Falcons return to action Tuesday in the annual Wayne County Championships. The meet begins at 3:30 p.m. at Little Big Horn on the Eastern Wayne campus.

Greene Central

takes 3-team meet

PIKEVILLE -- Colby Murphy and Josh Elmore carded identical 18-hole rounds of 75 and led Greene Central to a three-team, non-conference win Thursday afternoon at Lane Tree Golf Course.

The duo paced the Rams to a four-player total of 323, just two strokes lower than the host Golden Falcons. Blake Sutton and Josh Riberiro contributed scores of 84 and 89 for Greene Central.

Aycock's Will Vinson claimed medalist honors with a 72. Austin Forrest fired a 79. Jordan Elmore and Charles Cranford completed the team's four-player total with an 87 apiece.

SouthWest Edgecombe, led by Hunter Wishall's 77, finished with a 328.

Greene Central returns to action Monday in a six-team Eastern Plains 2-A match at Ironwood Golf Course in Greenville. The Golden Falcons participate in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference outing at Wedgewood Golf Course in Wilson.

Ham triumphs

at Willow Springs

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's Kyle Ham earned medalist honors with a 73 during Wednesday afternoon's non-conference encounter with perennial power Wilson Fike.

The host Golden Demons, the reigning 3-A eastern champions, outshot the Warriors 311-328 on the Willow Springs Country Club layout. Nick Barrow complemented Ham with a 75, while teammates Carter Walchli and Eric Huetter posted identical 18-hole scores of 90.

Spencer Jones added a 77 for Fike.

Braswell delivers

game-winning hit

PRINCETON -- Ashley Braswell laced a two-out, two-strike base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning and propelled Princeton past North Duplin 4-2 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday evening.

It was Braswell's lone hit of the game.

Haylee Wood led the Dawgs with three hits in three at-bats. Amber Wood added two hits in four plate appearances, while Brittany Baker and Tylan George contributed one hit apiece.

Amber Wood, a right-hander, threw a complete-game four-hitter and fanned seven North Duplin batters.

Kristen Jones doubled for the Rebels, who suffered their sixth consecutive defeat. Brittany Carr, Jenny Coley and Brittany Coley each provided a hit.

Left-handed pitcher Jessica Pridgen endured the mound loss.

On Wednesday, right-hander April Keene and Maegan Myers combined for a perfect game in the Dawgs' 12-0 rout of winless Spring Creek. Keene posted seven strikeouts in a four-inning stint, while Myers threw a perfect fifth with one strikeout.

Princeton (6-4 overall, 2-0 Carolina) travels to Ayden-Grifton next Wednesday.

Georgia Crow and Virginia Best collected two goals apiece in state-ranked Wayne Country Day's 7-1 victory over Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival Kerr-Vance Academy.

Georgia Tanner, Cherish Pinter and Mack Thompson added one goal apiece.

It was the CPIC opener for both teams.

Wayne Country Day, ranked No. 1 in the N.C. Independent Schools Association 1-A poll, and Kerr-Vance return to action this weekend in The Brittany III at Wilson. The Chargers (5-2 overall) oppose Cape Fear Academy on Saturday, while Kerr-Vance faces Wilson Christian.

Gerrell, Daughtry

hit HRs for Princeton

PRINCETON -- Daniel Gerrell and Ryan Daughtry each slapped a home run, and state-ranked Princeton rolled past North Duplin 15-5 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday evening.

Jared McLamb paced the Dawgs with three hits in four at-bats. Colin Parker and Gerrell provided two hits apiece. Daughtry finished 1-for-3 in Princeton's 14-hit attack.

Parker allowed four hits and fanned seven Rebel hitters in three-plus innings on the mound. Daughtry threw two-plus innings of five-hit, five-strikeout relief.

Billy Mello, Doug Lloyd and Will Lewis spearheaded North Duplin's offense with two hits apiece.

Lloyd, Lewis and Trea Beavers (1-for-3) each contributed an RBI.

Lloyd took the mound loss.

Princeton, ranked No. 4 in the latest ImpactBaseball.com poll, improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play. North Duplin (6-4, 0-2 Carolina) suffered its second consecutive league loss.

SNOW HILL -- Anderson Barnes delivered three hits and drove in four runs during C.B. Aycock's 12-1, non-conference victory over Greene Central on the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex diamond.

Greg Champion added two hits for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 5-3 overall. Dillon Barfield contributed one hit.

David Gurganus threw a five-hitter and fanned two Ram batters in the contest, which was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Wayne Christian improved to 2-1 overall.

Middle schools

Grantham softball 10, Rosewood 9 -- Madison Davis posted 14 strikeouts and batted 4-for-5, including three doubles, in the complete-game win. The Bulldogs (4-1 overall) remained unbeaten against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Division II at 2-0. Grantham entertains Dillard for a doubleheader next Thursday.

Eastern Wayne soccer 1, Norwayne 0 -- Lauren Breindel tallied the game's lone goal off Sydney Potter's assist. The Warriors (2-0 overall) travel to Grantham on Apr. 18, while the Cobras (0-1) visit Grantham next Tuesday.

Princeton softball 14, Corinth 0 -- Hannah Woodard batted 2-for-4 and recorded 11 strikeouts on the mound. Megan Gerrell contributed a team-leading four hits, while Summer Sasser batted 2-for-2.
