Jackson receives another CVAC softball honor

Jenny Jackson, who threw a seven-inning perfect game and helped herself with a home run in Mount Olive's 2-0 win over Coker Saturday, has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

The pitcher of the week award is the second for Jackson, who is also a two-time CVAC Player of the Week winner this season.

Jackson, a sophomore from Fremont (Charles B. Aycock), retired all 21 batters she faced to become the first pitcher in Trojan softball history to throw a no-hitter in conference play. Jackson retired eight batters on strikeout, seven on ground outs and four on infield pop-ups, including a foul pop-up behind home plate for the final out. Jackson allowed only one ball out of the infield. Jackson provided herself with an insurance run, hitting her team-leading eighth home run of the season in the fifth inning.

For the week, Jackson posted a 3-0 record in three starts last week with two complete games and a 0.37 earned run average. Including Monday's shutout win over Erskine, Jackson has pitched 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

Trojan players have won CVAC player and/or pitcher of the week awards in each of the last six weeks. Jackson swept both the CVAC player and pitcher of the week awards for the week of February 12-18.

Mount Olive (29-10 overall, 9-1 CVAC) remains in first place in the conference standings. The Trojans travel to Florence, S.C., Thursday to take on Francis Marion in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

Easley named to

all-freshman team

Mount Olive guard Kendrick Easley was among 10 players nationwide selected to the 2006-07 Division II Men's Basketball All-Freshman Team, as selected by basketball publication Division II Bulletin. Easley, who was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Freshman of the Year, is the first-ever Trojan to be named to the national All-Freshman Team.

Easley, a freshman from Norfolk, Va., averaged 14.8 points per game and scored a team-high 21 points for Mount Olive in the first round of the East Regional of the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship. Easley scored in double figures in 21 of his first 26 games for the Trojans. He reached the 20-point mark seven times, including a career-high 25 points against Lees-McRae.

Easley, the first Trojan men's basketball freshman in 10 years to start on opening day, is also the first Trojan since Chris McDonald in 1996-97 to be named CVAC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year.

Mount Olive posted a 23-8 record and advanced to the NCAA II Men's Basketball Championship for the fourth year in a row.

MOC golfers

take sixth

MONROE -- Kristin Moberg tied for 12th out of 43 golfers as Mount Olive finished sixth out of nine teams at the Ralph Hargett Women's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe. The 36-hole tournament was hosted by Wingate University.

Mount Olive improved its team score by 18 shots over the first round, finishing with a 346-328--674. The Trojans finished 12 strokes behind fifth-place Lincoln Memorial and 30 shots ahead of seventh-place Lenoir-Rhyne.

Moberg moved up five places from the first round, carding an 82-78--160. Kristen Freeman tied for 18th with an 84-83--167, while Kate Somek tied for 25th with a 90-81--171. Deborah Woodrum tied for 31st with a 90-86--176.

Wingate rallied from 11 shots down to win the event.

Mount Olive is off until April 22-24 when the Trojans compete in the 2007 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Golf Women's Championship at Winston-Salem.
