Aycock's (Julia) Lancaster hurls no-hitter against Kinston

KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock right-hander Julia Lancaster hurled a no-hitter and notched a season-high 13 strikeouts in a 9-0 decision over Kinston on Friday afternoon.

Lancaster walked one Viking batter in a complete-game effort and claimed her second mound win against three losses. The Golden Falcons (5-4 overall) remained unbeaten in two Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference outings this season.

Emily Jordan paced the Golden Falcons' 12-hit attack with two singles and a double in five official plate appearances. Jazzmine Lee doubled and drove in a run during her 2-for-5 outing.

Leigh Smith doubled twice and plated two runs. Shelly Lancaster provided two hits, including a double and an RBI. Julia Lancaster cranked out three hits and three RBI in four at-bats.

"As soon as our hitting comes around like both of our pitchers are pitching right now, we should be okay," said C.B. Aycock head coach David West. "Next Tuesday is a big game for us."

C.B. Aycock, the reigning ECC regular-season and tournament champion, entertains Wilson Hunt. Game time is 5 p.m.

Eagles' Davis

hurls 2nd no-hitter

WILSON -- Traci Davis struck out 13 of 16 batters she faced and finished with a no-hitter in Wayne Christian's 12-0, five-inning conquest of Community Christian.

Davis retired the final 10 Cyclone batters on strikeouts in a contest halted after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. The right-hander recorded her second no-hitter of the season for the Eagles, who improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play.

Carly Hightower and Courtney Barrow each batted 2-for-3 for Wayne Christian, the state's top-ranked team among N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A schools. Brittany Sullivan and Charity Wright each provided an extra-base hit.

The Eagles return to action March 31 in a weekend tournament and entertain Trinity Christian-Greenville on Apr. 3.

Kinston shocks

reigning ECC champ

KINSTON -- Kinston prevailed 10-9 in eight innings and knocked state-ranked C.B. Aycock from the unbeaten ranks in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Friday afternoon.

Tied at 9-9, the Vikings' Antonio Whitfield doubled to lead off the eighth inning. Andy Spence plated Whitfield with a single and dealt the Golden Falcons, No. 7 in the ImpactBaseball.com poll, their first ECC loss of the season.

Kinston pounded out 16 hits against three Aycock hurlers -- starter Jay Rose, reliever Bryant Hill and reliever Kyle Harmon. Harmon endured the mound loss and surrendered five runs (one earned) on eight hits. It was Harmon's third pitching appearance of the week.

"I was pleased with the gutty performance by Kyle," said Aycock head coach Charles Davis. "Kinston swung the bats well and we came out with a very lackadaisical attitude. We got our tails handed to us.

"Maybe it will be a wake-up call. It seems we as coaches know nothing, but we saw it coming and warned them. Now they just have to see it for themselves."

The Golden Falcons (5-3 overall) entertain Wilson Hunt next Tuesday.

WILSON -- Kyle Harrell just missed hitting for the cycle in Wayne Christian's 21-4 thrashing of Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Community Christian.

Harrell concluded the five-inning outing with five hits -- two doubles, a triple and two singles -- in five at-bats. Josiah Wright added three hits, while Dante Arthur doubled in a two-hit effort.

Adam Brannan fanned seven Cyclone batters and surrendered four hits en route to the mound victory. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Wayne Christian (4-1 overall, 2-0 CCC) plays host to Flora MacDonald Academy next Tuesday afternoon.

RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian collected two valuable doubles points and turned back Trinity Academy of Raleigh 6-3 in a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference match Thursday afternoon.

The No. 1 doubles of Taylor Gray-Woody Sasser and No. 2 tandem of Daniel Glover-Matt Thompson picked up a pro-set victory apiece. The same quartet was responsible for the Eagles' four points in singles play.

KINSTON -- Caroline Schlaeppi collected a hat trick (three goals) and dished out an assist as C.B. Aycock hammered Kinston 7-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Schlaeppi provided two first-half goals and completed the hat trick in the second half. Amanda Schlaeppi assisted on Caroline's first goal.

Senior Lizzie Sodoma notched two second-half goals, while Melina Gibson and Erin Medford each found the back of the net once. Sodoma had two assists, while Caroline Schlaeppi and Lauren Adcox handed out one assist apiece.

Golden Falcon keeper Courtney Sheeks stopped eight Viking shots and earned her first career shutout.

C.B. Aycock (6-2-1 overall, 2-0 ECC) plays host to Hunt on Tuesday.

LITTLEFIELD -- Spring Creek's Tasha Whitfield and Savannah Egleston each claimed an individual victory during a Carolina 1-A Conference meet at Ayden-Grifton.

Whitfield took the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, one inch. Egleston captured the 1,600-meter run in 7 minutes, 3 seconds. Teammate Reba Potter was second.

Whitfield ended up third in the discus and fourth in the 400. Melanique DeVeaux placed third in the 200.

Ayden-Grifton won the meet 85-36.

The Charger boys emerged victorious in every contested event and rolled to a 120-11 decision. The Gators received second-place efforts from Ryan Kelly (3,200 run), Paul Richter (1,600) and Jeremy Sanders (800 run).

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne seized first place in 11 of 18 contested events, but dropped an 85-84 decision at Wilson Beddingfield on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

Beddingfield competed unopposed in the pole vault and earned eight points, which proved crucial in its one-point victory.

Eastern Wayne's Dwight Ulmer grabbed the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Teammates Will White (110 hurdles), Lynwood Dees (300 hurdles), Bryan Coltrane (800), Kenyatta Bryant (long jump), Chris Jones (high jump) and Michael McCall (shot put) each posted an individual win.

The Warriors won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays.

Southern Wayne ended up third with 10 points. The Saints received second-place efforts from Mario Aguilar (400) and Olando Davis (high jump).

upends Rams

SNOW HILL -- The J.H. Rose ninth-grade baseball team upended Greene Central's junior varsity squad 4-3 on the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex diamond Friday afternoon.

Ross Johnson and Brandon Piner each had an RBI for the Rams. William Bynum suffered the mound loss.

Greene Central is the guest of C.B. Aycock next Wednesday.

Harrell delivers

game-winning hit

Chandler Harrell cranked out the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning and Wayne Christian edged Cape Fear Christian 12-11 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference action.

Harrell also doubled for the Eagles, who improved to 2-2 overall. Tyler Mooring contributed two hits. Chase Darden, Jordan Crouthamel and Stephen Gallagher each added a hit.

The Eagles visit Hobgood on Monday.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 14, Brogden 5 -- John Taylor provided two hits and two RBI for the unbeaten Cobras. Derrick Limbaugh emerged the winning pitcher. Norwayne (6-0 overall) improved to 3-0 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I opposition. The Cobras entertain Greenwood on Monday.
