Rebels' Lloyd tosses five-hitter

CALYPSO -- Junior right-hander Doug Lloyd tossed a five-hitter and North Duplin eased past Hobbton 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Lloyd fanned 10 Wildcat batters, walked four and yielded two earned runs in a complete-game effort.

Billy Mello paced the Rebels' offense with two hits, including a double, in three at-bats. Ryan Killette tripled in three plate appearances, while Rock Bennett provided a double.

North Duplin (6-2 overall) opens its Class 1-A Carolina Conference schedule next Tuesday at North Johnston.

Saints collect

ECC road victory

WILSON -- Sterling Grice laced a two-RBI single in a six-run, second-inning outburst as Southern Wayne hammered Wilson Beddingfield 10-2 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Thursday.

Grice finished with three hits in four plate appearances for the Saints, who improved to 4-5 overall and evened their ECC ledger at 1-1. Tyler Edwards contributed three hits, including a double, and drove in a third-inning run.

Chris Massey (two RBI) and Dave Overman (two RBI) each picked up a base hit. Garrett Barfield tripled in three plate appearances.

Michael Douglass claimed the mound win. The right-hander surrendered 10 hits, but struck out four and walked one in a complete-game performance.

Southern Wayne entertains Kinston next Tuesday, while Beddingfield (0-2 ECC) entertains Eastern Wayne the same afternoon.

Kinston shuts

out Goldsboro

KINSTON -- Jordan McIntyre and Donald Lewis produced Goldsboro's lone hits in a 14-0, five-inning loss Thursday afternoon at Kinston.

Antonio Whitfield, Josh Louck and Andy Spence cranked out three hits apiece for the Vikings. Whitfield emerged the winning pitcher.

Goldsboro (0-9 overall) returns to action March 29 at Wayne Christian.

Gerrell, Pate

homer for Dawgs

PRINCETON -- Daniel Gerrell blasted a grand-slam home run and Dustin Pate added a two-run shot in Princeton's 10-0, non-conference victory over Midway on Thursday afternoon.

Gerrell finished with six RBI for the Dawgs. Colin Parker batted 3-for-3, while Andrew Cobb went 2-for-3.

Parker picked up the mound win.

Princeton is the guest of Cary Academy today.

unbeaten in ECC

WILSON -- Taylor Sutton fired a one-hitter and Eastern Wayne's offense came to life in a 9-1 rout of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Hunt.

Sutton fanned five Hunt batters and walked two in a complete-game effort. The right-hander carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning until he surrendered a pinch-hit double.

Sutton collected his first mound win of the season and faced just four hitters over the minimum for a seven-inning game.

"A heckuva ball game (by Sutton), unbelievable," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jabo Fulghum. "He hit spots, pitched through some adversity. Even though he hit three batters, he found the zone.

"He's done nothing but gotten better as we've gone on this year."

Chad Gurley (two RBI), Walker Gourley (two RBI), Tyler Wicks and Jose Ponce cranked out two hits apiece for Eastern Wayne. John Wooten added a base hit and two RBI.

"We were patient at the plate and played good defense behind Taylor," said Fulghum. "We've just got to keep improving and play as a team. I like how we're playing right now."

Eastern Wayne (4-6 overall, 2-0 ECC) travels to Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday and is the guest of North Lenoir the following day.

Hawks' Sanders

hurls two-hitter

LaGRANGE -- Brittany Sanders produced the lone RBI and North Lenoir edged Charles B. Aycock 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Timon Jones led off the Hawks' fifth inning with a single. Kayla Sutton and Lauren Hudson advanced the speedy Jones with back-to-back sacrifice bunts. Sanders rapped a single to score Jones, and never let the Golden Falcons get a talon in the door.

Sanders threw a two-hitter on the mound and struck out 11 Aycock batters in a complete-game effort. The Golden Falcons' Emily Jordan tripled and Shelly Lancaster notched a base hit.

Jordan suffered her first pitching loss of the season, scattering six hits and striking out four in six innings of work.

C.B. Aycock (4-4 overall) travels to Kinston today. North Lenoir (7-2 overall) visits Southern Wayne on Monday.

Grantham powers

Saints past Bruins

WILSON -- Lynn Grantham stroked a two-strike, two-out RBI single in the sixth inning and propelled Southern Wayne to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A foe Wilson Beddingfield.

Grantham finished with two hits for the Saints, who improved to 10-1 overall and remained unbeaten in two ECC contests.

"Lynn continues to come up with the big hit for us," said Saints head coach Brad Matthews. "She is a true leader on this team; always focused on offense and defense."

Brianna Lofton, Lindsey Pearsall and Rachel Reynolds provided one hit apiece. Reynolds and Lofton, who stole one base, each scored one run.

Lauren Darden seized the mound win. The sophomore right-hander yielded one earned run on three hits and fanned nine Bruins in a complete-game effort.

Beddingfield fell to 0-2 in the ECC.

WILSON -- Lindsey Frederick doubled and drove in a run in Eastern Wayne's 6-1 loss against Eastern Carolina 3-A rival Wilson Hunt.

Caitlin Turner, Meghan Pittman, Carrie Adams and Allison Sutton each had a hit for the Warriors.

Lani Fricks endured the mound loss. The freshman right-hander gave up four earned runs on six hits and struck out three Hunt batters.

Eastern Wayne (0-8 overall, 0-2 ECC) travels to Wilson Beddingfield next Tuesday afternoon.

Errors, lack of

hits hurt Rebels

CALYPSO -- Two defensive errors and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning haunted North Duplin in a 4-3, non-conference loss against Hobbton.

"(Those things) cost us a chance to beat a very good Hobbton team," said Rebels head coach Danny Blackburn, whose team suffered its fourth consecutive defeat after a 4-0 start.

Brittany Carr, Casey Pate, Elizabeth Lane, Jessica Pridgen and Kristin Jones each picked up a hit for North Duplin. Pate and Lane combined for two RBI.

Left-handed hurler Jessica Pridgen took the mound loss. The junior surrendered just three hits and fanned seven Wildcat batters.

North Duplin opens its Carolina 1-A Conference schedule next Tuesday at North Johnston.

trounce Vikings

KINSTON -- C.B. Aycock swept the singles and doubles matches in a 9-0 thrashing of Eastern Carolina 3-A foe Kinston on the Bill Fay Park courts Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons received singles wins from Blake Vail, Addison Westbrook, Ben Evans and Blake Cooper. Vail-Westbrook and Evans-Quinn each triumphed in doubles.

Kinston forfeited three matches due to having just four players.

C.B. Aycock (6-5 overall) picked up its second ECC win in as many outings and entertains Wilson Hunt next Tuesday.

Top-seeded Jared Stone, Drew Jackson, Ben Wines, David Benton and Eric Barnes each produced a singles win for the visiting Warriors. Wines outlasted Alex Baskerville in a third-set tiebreaker.

The tandems of Wines-Christian Phufl and Benton-Barnes won in doubles.

PIKEVILLE -- Mark Sinning notched a medalist round of 70 and his New Bern teammates recorded a phenomenal outing Thursday afternoon at Lane Tree Golf Course.

The Bears posted a four-player total of 2-over par 290.

J.H. Rose finished a distant second at 307. Wilson Fike, the reigning 3-A eastern champion, carded a 313. C.B. Aycock, the meet host, used Will Vinson's 74 as the springboard to a four-player round of 318.

Jordan Elmore complemented Vinson's effort with a 78. Heyward Jeffreys and Austin Forrest turned in 18-hole totals of 82 and 84, respectively.

takes ECC meet

MOUNT OLIVE -- Eastern Wayne's Kyle Ham carded an 18-hole round of 72 and earned medalist honors in the first Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet of the season contested at Southern Wayne Country Club.

The Warriors posted a four-player round of 321, but finished three strokes behind Wilson Hunt's meet-best 318. Defending ECC champion C.B. Aycock ended up third at 323, followed by Wilson Beddingfield (330), Southern Wayne (369) and Kinston (372).

Jordan Elmore paced Aycock with a 77.

Andy Moore emerged Southern Wayne's top scorer with an 87.

Greene Central

finishes second

AYDEN -- Josh Elmore and Josh Morris fired identical rounds of 77 and led Greene Central to a runner-up finish in a three-team, non-conference match at Ayden Country Club.

Colby Murphy and Blake Sutton added scores of 81 and 88, respectively, for the Rams. Their 321 total was three strokes higher than meet winner South Central. Ayden-Grifton took third at 364.

South Central's Mike Waggoner emerged the medalist with a 73.

Greene Central (16-3 overall) returns to action Monday in an Eastern Plains 2-A meet at Falling Creek Country Club in Kinston.

Linda Cannon claimed play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament action at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Baker, Gregorcyk

pick up two wins

WILSON -- Sprinter Eugenia Baker and distance runner Kelly Gregorcyk each earned two individual victories during Thursday afternoon's three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Wilson Beddingfield.

Baker posted a regional-qualifying time of 12.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash and ran the 200 in 26.3 seconds. Gregorcyk prevailed in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

The duo helped the Warriors amass 91.5 points. The host Bruins finished second with 48.5 points and county rival Southern Wayne ended up third with 27 points.

Sarah Schley (800 run) and Noelle Kelly (400) each earned an individual victory. Baker and Kelly each ran a leg on the winning 800 and 1,600 relays. Schley and Gregorcyk participated on the winning 3,200 relay along with Shannon Rouse and Samantha Barrow.

Richelle Butler claimed the Warriors' lone field-event win with a throw of 31 feet, 7 1/2 inches in the shot put.

Eastern Wayne runs against ECC foes C.B. Aycock and Kinston on March 29 at Kinston.

C.B. Aycock's Crystal Lewis and Chantel Gaines each emerged a double winner during Thursday afternoon's, three-team Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet against Kinston and Wilson Hunt.

Lewis took first in the 300 hurdles and high jump. Gaines won the 400 and 200.

The Golden Falcons recorded first-place times in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Gaines, Lewis, Cara Sanders and Artice Felder comprised the 1,600 squad. Gaines, Lewis, Megan Hales and Jordan Stackle participated on the 3,200 relay.

C.B. Aycock (2-6 overall) also received top-four finishes from Ashley Toler (shot put), Hales (1,600 and 3,200 runs), Felder (400) and Audrey Ray (800).

Corrections

The News-Argus incorrectly reported that Rosewood lost to Farmville Central 4-1 on the softball diamond Wednesday afternoon.

The score should have been reversed in Rosewood's favor. It was the Eagles' first win over the Jaguars in four years.

Wayne Country Day improved to 3-1 overall (not 7-1 as reported) in women's soccer and has yet to play a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match.
