Eagles' Rose takes medalist honors in CCC meet

RALEIGH -- Clark Rose seized medalist honors with a 73 and sparked the Wayne Christian men's golf team to victory in the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference opening meet at Wildwood Greens.

The Eagles fashioned a four-player total of 305, six strokes better than defending CCC champion Durham Cresset Christian. Community Christian ended up a distant third at 374, followed by Erwin Cape Fear (376), Raleigh Trinity (377) and Northwood Temple (407).

Taylor Gardner and Eric Williams fired identical 18-hole rounds of 78 for the Eagles. Matt Davis concluded the team scoring with an 80. Andrew Radford and Hayden Gardner also competed.

Wayne Christian (7-0 overall, 5-0 CCC) travels to Smithfield-Selma on Thursday, and returns to CCC action March 19 at Cresset Christian.

C.B. Aycock drops

non-league match

WILSON -- Will Vinson returned from an injury and carded an 18-hole score of 80 in Charles B. Aycock's 322-333, non-conference loss against perennial 3-A power Wilson Fike.

Jordan Elmore turned in an 81 for the Golden Falcons on the Willow Springs Country Club links. Teammates Austin Forrest and Lee Carter contributed rounds of 85 and 87, respectively.

Fike's Spencer Jones took medalist honors with a 79.

Josie Ottaviani and Mary Ann Sutton shared play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.

Mary Morris and Evelyn Rose tied for low gross. Elisabeth Bentley claimed low net, while Pete Reaves and Evelyn Faulkner tied for low putts.

Novella Zambelli ended up with second net during second-flight competition in an Eastern Carolina Ladies League meet. Nancy Satterfield seized second gross in the fourth flight.

Georgia Crow recorded a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) in Wayne Country Day's 3-0, non-conference conquest of county archrival Wayne Christian.

Crow has six goals this season. The Chargers (2-0 overall) travel to Rosewood on Thursday.

Rosewood knocks

off Hobbton

David Smeltzer belted a grand slam and Cody Richards just missed hitting for the cycle in Rosewood's 16-5, non-conference victory over Hobbton on Tuesday evening.

Smeltzer finished with two hits, two runs scored and four RBI. Richards singled, doubled, tripled and plated two runs in four plate appearances.

Robert Franks contributed two hits and two RBI. Holt Rains doubled in a 2-for-3 effort. Garrett Howell added two hits, while Chris Hare tripled in two at-bats.

Josh Hamilton emerged the winning pitcher in a four-inning stint. He posted five strikeouts and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits. Taylor Allen threw a perfect seventh with two strikeouts.

Rosewood (4-1 overall) is the guest of Wayne Country Day on Thursday.

Ryan Ford delivered a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wayne Country Day turned back North Duplin 11-10 on Tuesday afternoon.

Ford supplied three hits and one RBI for the Chargers, who swept the regular-season series against the Rebels. Wayne Country Day remained unbeaten in three outings, while North Duplin departed 3-2 overall.

The Chargers' Travis Davis contributed three hits, including a pair of doubles, and four RBI. Teammate Kevin Herring batted 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Sam Steed contributed two hits and an RBI.

Ford earned the pitching win in relief of Davis.

Will Lewis homered for North Duplin and ended the non-conference outing with two hits and two RBI. Brad Rhodes went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.

Rock Bennett endured the mound loss.

Wayne Country Day welcomes Rosewood on Thursday, while North Duplin travels to Hobbton the same afternoon.

WILMINGTON -- David Card ripped a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Wilmington Ashley knocked off Southern Wayne 14-12 on Tuesday afternoon.

"We battled hard, played with a lot of intensity and enthusiasm," said Saints head coach Trae McKee. "They threw their best arms and we had some real good plate appearances against them. The biggest thing is we're continuing to get better."

Chris Massey homered and supplied three hits for the Saints, who dropped to 2-4 overall. Jordan Williams added three hits and two RBI, while Garrett Barfield contributed two hits and an RBI.

Dave Overman, Brady Wiggins (three RBI), Byron Powell (RBI) and Tyler Edwards supplied one hit apiece.

Sterling Grice took the mound loss in relief of Powell.

Southern Wayne entertains Wallace-Rose Hill on Thursday.

Goldsboro High

Marquis Dance tripled and doubled in Goldsboro High's 25-16, non-conference loss against James Kenan on Tuesday afternoon.

Donald Lewis registered two hits for the Cougars. Teammates Darrick Smith doubled, while Jordan McIntyre and Dante Love each singled.

Goldsboro (0-6 overall) begins a six-game road swing Friday at county rival Wayne Country Day.

North Lenoir

blitzes Warriors

Brittany Sanders threw a two-hitter in North Lenoir's 5-0, non-conference victory over Eastern Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.

Sanders, a senior left-hander, notched nine strikeouts and walked four Warriors on the New Hope diamond. She helped her cause offensively with three hits, including a double, in four plate appearances.

Kayla Letchworth banged out two hits and an RBI. Emily Brown batted 2-for-4, while Timon Jones tripled and plated a run in three at-bats.

Lindsey Frederick and Williams each had a hit for the Warriors.

North Lenoir (3-2 overall) travels to Havelock today, while Eastern Wayne (0-7 overall) plays host to Farmville Central on Friday.

D.H. Conley

rallies in 7th

HOLLYWOOD -- State-ranked D.H. Conley strung together five hits and plated three seventh-inning runs in a come-from-behind, 5-4 non-conference victory over Southern Wayne.

The Vikings, ranked No. 10 in the N.C. Fastpitch Coaches Association 3-A poll, handed the Saints their first loss in seven outings. Conley trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

"That was a heartbreaker," said eighth-year Southern Wayne head coach Brad Matthews.

Lindsey Pearsall's RBI double forced a 1-1 deadlock in the fourth inning. The Vikings took the back the lead in their half of the fourth, until the Saints' Lynn Grantham smacked a three-RBI double in the sixth inning.

Sophomore right-hander Lauren Darden took the mound loss in a complete-game effort. She struck out six, walked three and yielded five runs (three earned) on 11 hits.

The teams meet again Thursday in Dudley. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Faith Christian

takes season opener

GREENVILLE -- Jennifer Christopher yielded three hits in a complete-game effort during Faith Christian's season-opening, 14-3 victory over Trinity Christian.

Christopher notched eight strikeouts and walked four for the Conquerors, the reigning N.C. Christian Schools Association Class 2-A state champions. Christopher also added a hit.

Renee Provencal led Faith's offense with two hits, while Courtney Dail slapped a home run. Madison Caudle, Lindsey Godwin and Brooke Anderson each supplied a hit.

Faith Christian travels to Wilmington Christian on Thursday.

Saints suffer

HOLLYWOOD -- Southern Wayne banged out 11 hits in a 10-7, non-conference loss against D.H. Conley on Tuesday afternoon.

Tara Hirsch, Kayla Gracyk and Sara Nelson supplied two hits apiece for the Saints. Gracyk drove in one run, while Nelson collected two RBI.

Kristin Bova endured the pitching loss.

Hirsch emerged the winning pitcher in the Saints' 12-7 victory Monday afternoon at Southern Nash. Additional details were not submitted to the News-Argus.

Southern Wayne (1-2 overall) plays host to D.H. Conley at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Jordan Crouthamel and Steven Gallagher collected three doubles apiece in Wayne Christian's season-opening, 14-13 conquest of Hobgood Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

The Raiders led 9-0 after two innings, but couldn't keep the lead. The Eagles efficiently used Crouthamel and Gallagher's hits, and also benefited from extra-base hits by Chase Darden and Josh Burdett. Kyle Sasser provided the game-winning RBI with two outs.

Wayne Christian (1-0 overall) plays host to Rosewood on Thursday.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne baseball 12, Mount Olive 2 -- C.J. Edwards and Jonathan Carter doubled for the Warriors. Aaron Debusk (two strikeouts) and Tyler Brown (one strikeout) combined for the pitching win. Eastern Wayne (2-0 overall) entertains Dillard on Thursday.

Eastern Wayne baseball 9, Spring Creek 7 -- Ryan Mitchell banged out three hits, while Jonathan Carter and Lamar Best (triple) provided two hits apiece. Zack Mozingo earned the mound victory. Chris Boseman endured the mound loss for the Gators and collected three hits. Duane Gurganus doubled in a two-hit effort.
