Chargers knock off Shannon Forest (S.C.) Christian School

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day banged out a season-high 10 hits and cruised past Shannon Forest (S.C.) Christian 9-3 at historic Fleming Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Ford provided three hits and two RBI for the Chargers, who remained unbeaten in two outings. Cameron Ford provided three RBI in a 2-for-4 effort, while Kevin Herring contributed one hit and two RBI.

Sam Steed tripled in three plate appearances. Kyle Pender doubled, while Travis Davis and Joseph Cha recorded one hit apiece.

"We hit the ball a lot better," said WCDS head coach Michael Taylor.

"We went from having 10 strikeouts in our opening game to just two on Saturday. I commend the guys for being more aggressive at the plate."

Davis emerged the winning pitcher in relief of starter Trent Langston. Davis tossed four innings of one-hit, seven-strikeout relief. Ryan Ford threw the final two innings and allowed two hits.

WCDS and Shannon Forest reached the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A final four a year ago.

"I thought this was a big win for us against a quality opponent," said Taylor.

The Chargers entertain North Duplin on Tuesday.

KINSTON -- Sthil Sowers and C.C. Croom delivered two hits apiece in North Lenoir's 12-1, non-conference thrashing of county rival Kinston.

Sowers also scored twice in the seven-inning affair, while Taylor Ginn drove in two runs in two at-bats. John Alphin doubled and plated two runs.

Alphin earned the mound victory with six strikeouts and three hits in a five-inning stint. Dewitt Pope threw two innings of two-strikeout shutout relief.

North Lenoir (3-1 overall) entertains Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Goldsboro drops

non-league affair

WILSON -- Wilson Fike defeated Goldsboro 25-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (0-5 overall) play host to James Kenan on Tuesday.

Spring Creek

knocks off Midway

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Timothy Rogers and Alex Casey combined for six hits in Spring Creek's 14-8, non-conference conquest of Midway.

Rogers tripled and recorded two RBI for the Gators, who improved to 4-1 overall under the direction of first-year head coach Heath Whitfield. Anthony Brogden supplied two hits, including a double, and three RBI.

Casey stole two bases, and Ray Grady added one hit and two RBI. Josh Gammon doubled and drove in two runs. Overall, the Gators pounded Midway's pitching staff for 14 hits.

Brogden claimed the pitching win in relief of Grady, who posted five strikeouts during four innings of work. Brogden threw one inning, but relinquished the pitching duties to Casey, who shut down the Raiders the final two innings.

Spring Creek welcomes Greene Central on Tuesday.

Warriors collect

win on the coast

WILMINGTON -- Eastern Wayne triumphed in two of three doubles matches and nipped Wilmington Laney 5-4 on Friday afternoon.

The Warriors' No. 2 tandem of Drew Jackson-David Benton squeezed out an 8-6 decision against the Buccaneers' Adam Spolarish-Chris Lucas. Teammates Eric Barnes-Ken Lam collected an 8-4 win at the No. 3 slot. Jackson, Christian Phufl and Barnes each prevailed in singles.

The Warriors (4-2 overall) play host to Wilson Fike on Thursday.
