Southern Wayne pounds East Duplin

BEULAVILLE -- Southern Wayne erupted for seven runs in the first inning and cruised the rest of the night to a 16-5 win over East Duplin in five innings.

Garrett Barfield went 2-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored for the Saints. Scott Holloman went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Tyler Edwards added two hits and three RBIs and Dave Overman drove in runs for Southern Wayne.

"It was really good to see us rebound after Tuesday's game," said Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee. "We came out ready to play. We were really aggressive offensively."

Michael Douglas (2-0) pitched 31/3 innings of shut-out baseball to pick up the win while allowing only one hit and striking out four.

Southern Wayne improves to 2-2 on the season and will next travel to face D.H. Conley on Friday evening.

Sowers throws

shut out for Hawks

LAGRANGE -- Sthil Sowers threw a complete game shutout to lead the North Lenoir Hawks to a 4-0 blanking of arch-rival South Lenoir on Wednesday evening.

Sowers scattered five hits over seven innings, walked two and struck out 11.

Taylor Ginn went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for the Hawks while Brandon Sutton added two hits and two runs scored.

North Lenoir moves to 4-1 with the victory and will next travel to Kinston on Friday.

Eastern Wayne blanks

North Lenoir

Natalie Taylor scored two goals and assisted on another to help lead Eastern Wayne to its first win of the year, a 4-0 whitewashing of North Lenoir on Wednesday evening.

Taylor put the Warriors on the board just three minutes into the contest when she received a pass from Samantha Frazer and rocketed a shot to the lower left of the goal which got past goalie Meghan Johnson to make it 1-0 Eastern Wayne.

Frazer came back and scored on a direct kick to make it 2-0.

Taylor later added a second goal via a Kelsey Griffith assist and Kasie Edwards tallied the final score for Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors improved to 1-3 on the season.

Aycock gets

past Princeton

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock scored three second-half goals to erase an early 1-0 deficit and beat Princeton 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Amanda Schlaeppi scored off an assist by Erin Medford to even the score at 1-1 for Aycock. Lizzie Sodoma then scored back-to-back goals to put the Golden Falcons ahead.

Courtney Sheeks added seven saves in the goal for Aycock. The Golden Falcons improve to 3-1-1 on the season and will next play host to Wilson Fike on Friday.

Rosewood wins

at Kinston

KINSTON -- Rosewood freshman goalie Taylor Johnston recorded her first clean sheet by stopping three Kinston shots and making a brilliant save of a penalty kick to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 shut out of Kinston on Wednesday afternoon.

Gabrielle Cornman opened the scoring for Rosewood in the first half when she booted a shot to the back of the net from an assist by Rachel McCormick.

McCormick then tallied the Eagles final goal on a assist from Cornman.

Rosewood is now a perfect 2-0 and will start conference play next week when it travels to Spring Creek on March 14.

South Lenoir edges

North Lenoir

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir dropped a 6-4 decision to rival South Lenoir on Wednesday afternoon.

Kayla Sutton led the Hawks' bats going 3-for-4 with a double. Brittany Sanders suffered the loss for the Hawks giving up six runs on five hits, walked one and struck out eight.

North Lenoir falls to 1-2.

Aycock records

first win

PIKEVILLE -- Blake Vail continued his superior play as he improved to a perfect 4-0 in singles with a 7-6, 6-1 straight set win over Griffin Benton of Wilson Fike.

The victory by Vail was one of seven on the day by the Golden Falcons as they defeated Wilson Fike 7-2 for their first win in 2007.

Aycock, now 1-3, next travels to North Lenoir today.

Brandi Dean scored the game-winning goal on Wednesday night against the Hawks of North Lenoir as Eastern Wayne won 1-0.

Danielle Daniels tallied two saves in goal for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne improves to 1-1 and will play at Jacksonville White Oak on Friday.
