MOC's Jackson earns yet another CVAC honor

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jenny Jackson, who set a Mount Olive school record and tied for the fifth-highest single-game RBI total in NCAA II softball history, was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Softball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

The award was the second in three weeks for Jackson and marks the third week in a row Mount Olive has captured the player and/or pitcher of the week award.

Jackson, a sophomore from Fremont (Charles B. Aycock HS), drove in nine runs in the Trojans' 14-2 win Sunday at Elizabeth City State. Jackson hit a three-run homer, a three-run double, a two-run single and an rbi-single in her 4-for-4 day. The NCAA II record for most rbi in a game is 11.

Jackson was 8-for-13 during the week for a .615 batting average and a 1.000 slugging percentage. She hit safely in all four games she played to extend her hitting streak to 12.

Nordan honored

Stephen Nordan, who averaged more than two runs batted in per contest in five games last week for nationally 22nd-ranked Mount Olive, was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Baseball Player of the Week.

Nordan, a senior from Angier (Clayton HS), hit .571 (12-for-21) with 12 runs batted to help the Trojans post a 4-1 record during the week, including a sweep over Erskine in a three-game conference series. Nordan went 4-for-5 and singled home the game-winning run in Mount Olive's series-opening 4-3 victory over Erskine in the series opener. He followed with a 4-for-4 performance, including a two-run homer, in the second game of the series and capped the week with a two-hit game.

Nordan hit safely in all five games and drove in at least one run in each of the Trojans' five games during the week. Nordan opened the week with three runs batted in against Pfeiffer.

MOC men win

Jonathan Greene shot a second-round 74 and finished two shots ahead of Mount Olive teammates Johan Hagsund and Mick Moberg to capture first place at the MOC Men's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Mount Olive fielded two teams in the seven-team tournament and took home the top two spots on the team leaderboard. Mount Olive "A" finished first with a 624, followed by Mount Olive "B" at 632.

Virginia Wesleyan was third with a 650, seven shots ahead of Anderson at 657. Johnston CC finished fifth with a 701, followed by North Carolina Wesleyan at 758 and Johnson C. Smith with a 774.

The title was the second this year for Greene, who carded a 79-74--153. Greene won the Dogfight At The Neuse Tournament in October.

Hagsund overcame a first round 81 to shoot a 74 Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 155, tying him with first-round leader Moberg (76-79--155) and Trae Kresinske (80-75--155) of Virginia Wesleyan.

Seven Trojans finished in the top 10 as Scott Woodard (83-75--158) and Chris Bitzenhofer (79-79--158) tied for fifth out of 37 golfers, along with Will Ferguson (78-80--158) of Anderson. Enobong Udo (78-81--159) finished eighth.

Rounding out the top 10 were Trojan freshmen Tyler Rainear (77-83--160) and Pete Skirpstas (83-77--160), who tied for ninth.

Brad Alford (86-75--161) finished 11th, Will Williams (87-79--166) tied for 17th and Cameron Phillips (82-87--169) tied for 21st to round out Mount Olive's scoring.

Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans compete in the 36-hole Lee Nissan/Barton College Intercollegiate.

Somek leads MOC

ladies to victory

Kate Somek captured her first collegiate tournament championship and Mount Olive took home the team title at the MOC Women's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Lane Tree Golf Course. All four Trojan golfers finished in the top four on the individual leaderboard.

Somek shot a 38 on the front nine as the tournament was shortened to 27 holes. Somek carded a 92-38--130 to finish six strokes ahead of Kristen Freeman (92-44--136). Deborah Woodrum (96-43--139) placed third, followed by Kristin Moberg (93-47--140).

Mount Olive outdistanced second-place Hollins and third-place Johnson C. Smith.

The Trojans next compete in the St. Andrews Spring Invitational March 19-20.
