Campbell shuts out Pirates

GREENVILLE -- Reliever Trevor Smith picked up the mound win and Campbell University used six pitchers to blank East Carolina 2-0 at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Smith yielded one hit and struck out two in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Brandon Scott and provided two innings of two-strikeout relief, and Ryan Hamme (one strikeout) recorded the save. Hamme smacked a solo home run in the ninth inning.
Justin Lilly started for the Camels and retired two ECU batters on strikeouts in two innings. Matt Martinez surrendered a third-inning hit before Smith took the mound.
Pirate hurler Josh Dowdy threw a career-high 62/3 innings during his second career start. Former Eastern Wayne standout Brett Butts made his fourth appearance of the season and closed out the Campbell seventh with a strikeout.
Senior left-hander Jason Neitz allowed one run on two hits and fanned three Camel batters.
Ryan Tousley paced the ECU offense with two hits in four plate appearances. Dale Mollenhauer, Corey Kemp and Ryan Wood each supplied a hit.
Campbell (1-5) snapped a five-game losing streak, while the Pirates (2-5) suffered their fourth consecutive loss. The Pirates entertain St. John's on Friday, Washington on Saturday and in-state rival Duke on Sunday.
