MOC Volleyball splits

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Trojans took the first of two matches in NCAA men's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. In the first match, Mount Olive defeated Warner Southern 30-27, 30-24, 24-30, 27-30, and 15-10. The Royals rallied to take the second match of the day, as Mount Olive fell to Warner Southern 25-30, 30-25, 32-34, 30-22, 13-15.
Cesar Trigo de Serrano led the Trojans to their victory with 15 kills and 5 blocks. Mike Carroll and Pedro Penate added 12 kills each as Penate also assisted with 8 digs and 2 aces. Jose Lanier finished with 7 blocks and 3 aces while Zach Wilson recorded 55 assists.
The Royals were led by John Grotowski with 16 kills, 9 digs, and 2 aces. Shedrick Forbes and Matt Gizzi each added 15 kills and Chris Guerra finished with 55 assists, 9 digs, and 2 blocks.
Although Eliezer Maldonado led Mount Olive with 18 kills, 7 blocks, and 4 digs, the Trojans fell short on getting a second win for the day. Penate added 16 kills, 3 digs, and 2 aces while Jose Lanier recorded 13 kills, 7 blocks, and 5 aces. Zach Wilson and Alex Hoekstra finished with 48 and 11 assists, respectively.
Warner Southern took the second match as Matt Gizzi recorded 21 kills, and Shedrick Forbes, had 15 kills. Chris Guerra led the team with 57 assists, while Tom Amenita had 9 digs.
Mount Olive (6-2) returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Eastern Mennonite. Match time is 7p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va. Warner Southern (5-3) will be back in action on March 2-3 at the Park University Tournament, in Parkville, Mo.
