Cowan sparks Eastern Wayne boys to first road win of season

WILSON -- Senior guard D.J. Cowan drilled four 3-pointers and scored 15 points in Eastern Wayne's 63-54 conquest of Wilson Beddingfield in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play.

The Warriors (3-10 overall) snapped a two-game skid and picked up their first conference victory in three tries. The Bruins (5-10) tumbled from the unbeaten ranks in the ECC and are tied with state-ranked Kinston for second place.

Darius Wilder added 12 points and six rebounds for Eastern Wayne, which won its first road game of the season. Lamar Davis provided 10 points and six assists.

Eastern Wayne is the guest of Kinston next Friday.

Floronta Wynn led four Wayne Country Day players in double figures with 31 points in a 92-65 rout of Faith Christian-Rocky Mount on Friday evening.

The Chargers (6-8 overall) extended their modest win streak to two games and evened their record at 1-1 against Coastal Plains Independent 1-A foes.

Jeff Franklin pumped in 20 points. Ajay Fowler and Kameron Byrd chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.

"We played a great game," said WCDS head coach Mike Ellis. "Our zone press was just terrific."

Wayne Country Day entertains Ridgecroft next Tuesday.

Goldsboro snaps

two-game skid

LaGRANGE -- Defending Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season champion Goldsboro built a 24-9 lead after one quarter and dismantled North Lenoir 92-55 at Wooten Gymnasium on Friday evening.

The Cougars (11-6 overall) snapped a two-game losing streak against EPC opposition, and travel to league leader Greene Central next Friday.

Tim Kornegay poured in a game-high 24 points for Goldsboro. East Carolina signee Daquan Joyner powered his way to a 21-point effort. Tim Hobbs provided 16 points, while Eric McLean and Keonta McDuffie collected 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Goldsboro shot nearly 56 percent (39 of 70) from the floor and held the Hawks to just 40 percent shooting.

Marquez Powell led North Lenoir, now 0-3 in EPC play, with 10 points. Joe Whitfield, D.J. Artis and Juel Bizzell tallied eight points apiece.

Greene Central

grabs EPC 2-A lead

SNOW HILL -- Senior Chevalier Howell buried the game-winning free throw with less than six seconds remaining in Greene Central's come-from-behind, 82-81 victory over archrival Farmville Central.

The Rams trailed by 12 points and had three players to foul out.

After a steal and game-tying layup, Howell got fouled and converted the free throw -- his 35th point during the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference affair.

Albert Barron complemented Howell's effort with an 11-point outing. Reggie Johnson and Curtis Braswell pumped in 10 points apiece for the Rams. Danny Moye contributed nine points and 13 rebounds.

Greene Central (11-5 overall) grabbed sole possession of the EPC lead at 3-0 and plays host to reigning regular-season champion Goldsboro High next Friday.

Kinston upends

Southern Wayne

DUDLEY -- Kinston capitalized on its superior size and claimed an 83-65 decision over Southern Wayne, the defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season and tournament champion.

"I felt we got beat in the paint," said first-year Southern Wayne coach Russell Royal. "We definitely got overpowered at times by their size and strength. We loved the effort out of the kids. They played tough against one of the best teams in the state."

Orlando Davis led the Saints with 27 points. Anthony Vick added 13 points, while Paris Armwood contributed 10 points and eight assists.

Southern Wayne (7-8 overall) dropped to 1-2 in the ECC and plays host to county rival Charles B. Aycock next Friday.

Daughtry leads

Princeton to win

PRINCETON -- Ryan Daughtry ripped the nets for 30 points in Princeton's 61-42 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference archrival North Johnston on Friday evening.

Daniel Gerrell and Adam Nethercutt contributed 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs, who improved to 12-5 overall and remained tied with Ayden-Grifton for the league lead at 3-0.

Princeton entertains Rosewood next Friday.

CALYPSO -- Chris Graham emerged North Duplin's top scorer with 15 points in a 79-45 loss against Carolina 1-A Conference co-leader Ayden-Grifton on Friday evening.

Doug Lloyd chipped in 13 points and Desi Smith contributed five points for the Rebels, who remained winless in nine outings.

Tanner Carnes led four Chargers in double figures with 21 points. Matt Dougherty tallied 14 points, while Steffen McGhee and Terrence Peterson supplied 10 points apiece.

Ayden-Grifton (10-5 overall) remained tied with Princeton at 3-0 in the league.

Eastern Wayne nearly

pulls off upset

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne led defending state champion Beddingfield 44-41 with three minutes to play, but came up just short 50-49 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action on Friday evening.

The score was tied at 49 in the final seconds when Bruins' 6-foot-4 center Jean Best was fouled by Brittani Billups with no time remaining on the clock. Best proceeded to make the first free throw to clinch the win for Beddingfield, which claimed its 15th consecutive victory against league opposition.

"I'm very proud of the girls' effort," said Eastern Wayne coach Brent Holland. "We're disappointed we lost, but we're also extremely happy that we went into the defending state 3-A champion's place and competed."

Billups led the Warriors with 17 points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals. Yasmine Washington also contributed a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Eastern Wayne (5-8 overall) slipped to 2-1 in the ECC.

comes up short

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's difficulties in crunch time plagued the Saints again as they fell to Kinston 57-55, Friday night in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action.

Shakoria Clark scored 22 points while hitting five threes for Southern Wayne. Lynneshia Leonard scored 13 points.

"We're playing decent basketball. We're just not getting it done at the end," said Southern Wayne coach Chuck Crumpler. "We've got to learn to box out better and rebound. We have to play smarter basketball, not just physical."

The Saints (7-8 overall) remained winless in three ECC contests and plays host to C.B. Aycock next Friday.

LaGRANGE -- Danielle Irby pumped in 11 points during the final three minutes of play in Goldsboro's 55-45 loss at Eastern Plains 2-A Conference co-leader North Lenoir.

The Hawks (14-3 overall) remained unbeaten in three EPC outings.

Freshman Marissa Lanier led North Lenoir with 14 points. Brittany McPhail and Keshonnia Miller added eight points apiece for the Hawks, who led by as many as 25 points in the final quarter.

Goldsboro (0-3 EPC) exited 2-14 overall.

SNOW HILL -- Brianna Stanton poured in 28 points to lead Greene Central to a 58-55 win over archrival Farmville Central on Friday evening in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action.

Shanice Pettaway added 12 for the Rams, who improved to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Greene Central plays host to Goldsboro on Jan 19.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rikki Best scored a team-high 15 points in Spring Creek's 61-55 victory over Rosewood on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Friday evening.

Melvin DeVeaux added 13 points for the Gators, who rose to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Cody Richards led Rosewood (2-12, 0-3 Carolina) with a game-high 19 points.

upends Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Wilson Hunt rallied from a three-point halftime deficit and eased past Charles B. Aycock 49-42 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Friday afternoon.

Kyle LaFlamme paced the host Golden Falcons with 11 points. Tyheim Pitt and Antwan Hagins provided nine and seven points, respectively.

Jeremy Jeffers and Calvin Carter tallied 13 points apiece for the Warriors. Wilson Hunt (11-2) remained unbeaten in three ECC contests.

C.B. Aycock (5-12 overall, 1-2 ECC) is the guest of county rival Southern Wayne next Friday.
