Aycock's girls snap two-game skid

PIKEVILLE -- Jazzmine Lee pumped in a game-high 19 points and Charles B. Aycock snapped a two-game losing streak with a 63-54 victory over Kinston on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Falcons (6-10 overall) evened their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference worksheet at 1-1 heading into Friday's home game against Wilson Hunt.

Aycock built a 13-point first-half lead and saw its advantage dip to nine points after three quarters. Each team pumped in 24 points in the final eight minutes of play.

"The girls did a great job of running the ball in the first half tonight," said first-year Golden Falcons coach Carrie Reynell. "We had a bit of a defensive lull and didn't do a good job of stopping their dribble penetration, but we did a good job of executing the adjustments we discussed at halftime.

"We also had our role players step up tonight and do exactly what we needed them to do."

Erin Medford buried a pair of 3-pointers, and finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Bridgette Briggs added 11 points and Jasmine Dobbin chipped in nine.

Phylicia Dunn and Shaquala Rhodes emerged Kinston's top scorers with 15 and 13 points, respectively. The Vikings (3-10) remained winless in two ECC outings.

Eastern Wayne

claims road victory

WILSON -- Brittani Billups poured in a game-high 26 points and Eastern Wayne slipped past Wilson Hunt 47-44 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

The visiting Warriors (5-7 overall) seized their first league road victory in two-plus seasons and remained perfect in two ECC outings. They continue play Friday at Wilson Beddingfield, the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A state champion.

"We were real happy to get a tough win on the road," said Eastern Wayne head coach Brent Holland.

Zhanea Charles and Danielle Daniels each scored six points for the Warriors. Teammate Yasmine Washington added five.

Chelsea Atkinson led Hunt with 17 points.

Faith Christian

upends Mt. Calvary

Faith Christian improved to 2-2 on the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region scene with a 30-20 triumph over Mt. Calvary-Hookerton on Tuesday evening.

Alyssa Hill provided a double-double -- 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sister Amie added eight rebounds and five points. Lindsey Godwin chipped in five points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Kristen Maddox contributed six points and three steals. Renee Provencal recorded five points, two assists and four steals.

Faith Christian (4-5) is the guest of Trinity Christian-Greenville on Thursday.

Tarboro escapes

Rams in EPC 2-A

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central senior Briana Stanton led a balanced offensive attack with nine points in a 50-45 defeat against Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro High on Tuesday evening.

Natasha Williams and Joslyn Conner each scored eight points for the Rams, who slipped to 1-1 in conference play.

Kanesha Mercer paced the visiting Vikings with 25 points.

Greene Central (7-8 overall) entertains archrival Farmville Central on Friday.

Panthers stop

Eagles in league play

KENLY -- In a matchup of two Carolina 1-A champions in 2006, North Johnston survived Rosewood 54-46 on Tuesday evening.

Shanice Williams delivered a 21-point effort for the Panthers, the reigning Carolina 1-A tournament champions who slipped to 11th in NCPreps.com 1-A voting this week.

Courtney Hill led the Eagles, the defending Carolina 1-A regular-season champions, with 17 points. Mary Moore added nine, followed by Kasie Braswell with eight.

"North Johnston is a very strong defensive team and I was very pleased with my girls' performance against it," said Rosewood head coach Debbie Bailey. "We stayed within four to five points the whole game, but just couldn't pull out the win.

"The score doesn't reflect the hustle and effort of our team."

Rosewood (5-7, 1-1 Carolina) travels to Spring Creek on Friday.

Princeton handily

beats North Duplin

PRINCETON -- Stephanie Daughtry and C.C. Sanders reached double figures in Princeton's 58-23 victory over North Duplin in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Daughtry scored 21 points and Sanders added 11 for the Bulldogs, who improved to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Jodie Williamson led the Rebels with eight points. Samantha Cates and Jessica Pridgen provided five points apiece.

Princeton visits North Johnston on Friday, while North Duplin (0-7 overall, 0-2 Carolina) entertains Ayden-Grifton.

Boys basketball

Trio registers double

figures for Conquerors

Jeremy Sandlin posted a double-double -- 20 points, 14 rebounds -- in Faith Christian's 70-48 thrashing of Mt. Calvary-Hookerton on the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region scene Tuesday evening.

The Conquerors improved to 11-1 overall and remained unbeaten in four region outings.

T.J. Sasser and Aaron Sladick added 20 and 19 points, respectively.

Rosewood picks

up league victory

KENLY -- Dennis Jones and Holt Rains each scored in double figures as Rosewood rolled past North Johnston 57-42 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Jones pumped in 14 points and Rains added 13 for the Eagles, who improved to 3-9 overall and 1-1 against conference opposition. Rosewood snapped the Panthers' modest two-game win streak.

The Eagles drained 21 of 27 free throw attempts.

Germaine Grimes, Brian Williams and Willie Pearce picked up eight points apiece for North Johnston, which dipped to 2-14 overall.

Rosewood is the guest of county rival Spring Creek on Friday.

Daughtry's FT

sinks North Duplin

PRINCETON -- Ryan Daughtry drained the game-winning free throw with 10 seconds left as Princeton nipped North Duplin 50-49 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Daughtry finished with nine points for the Dawgs, who claimed their sixth win of the season by three possessions or less.

Daniel Gerrell emerged Princeton's top scorer with 13 points, while Josh Barefoot added 10. Josh Holmes and Adam Nethercutt tallied six points apiece for Princeton, which improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Doug Lloyd collected a game-high 16 points for the Rebels. Teammate Chris Graham chipped in 10.

Princeton entertains archrival North Johnston on Friday, while North Duplin (0-7 overall) visits Wayne Country Day today.

Greene Central

eases past THS

SNOW HILL -- Chevalier Howell triggered the Greene Central offense with a team-high 20 points in a 62-53 victory over Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro High on Tuesday evening.

Albert Barron chipped in 19 points and Brandon Sutton added nine for the Rams, who improved to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the EPC.

Jontae Sherrod and Tyre Dancy led Tarboro with 22 and 11 points, respectively.

Greene Central plays host to archrival Farmville Central on Friday.

State-ranked Hunt

knocks off E. Wayne

WILSON -- Center Larson Cheers collected a team- and game-high 25 points as state-ranked Wilson Hunt turned back Eastern Wayne 66-59 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

The homestanding Warriors, ranked No. 5 in the latest NCPreps.com poll, climbed to 12-2 overall and 2-0 against conference opposition. They continue play Friday at C.B. Aycock.

Alton Kinson complemented Cheers' effort with 12 points.

"They're a really good team," said Eastern Wayne head coach Marvin Bowman. "(Larson) is a really good player and they did an outstanding job of isolating him. In the second half, we were able to slow him down just a little bit.

"They do a lot of things well."

Bowman said his Warriors trailed by three late in the fourth quarter, but Hunt pulled away with stellar shooting at the free throw line.

Senior guard D.J. Cowan led Eastern Wayne with 23 points, while Will White added 10. The Warriors travel to ECC co-leader Wilson Beddingfield on Friday.

County match

postponed

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek wrestling coach Dwight Glenn announced that Tuesday's match with county rival Rosewood has been postponed due to a death in his family.

The teams will wrestle Jan. 30 at Spring Creek.

Rosewood (12-6 overall) returns to action Saturday in a day-long Class 1-A Carolina/Tar-Roanoke Athletic/Albemarle Conference dual tournament at Louisburg. Matches begin at 9 a.m.

Eastern Wayne

perfect vs. Bruins

Eastern Wayne seized sole possession of first place in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference ranks with an 84-0 shellacking of Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors (10-2 overall) clinched their second consecutive berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs, which begin Feb. 6. They lead archrival and defending ECC champion C.B. Aycock, which had a bye week, by one match in the conference standings.

Junior Chris Tesar, who is inching closer to school and county win records, started the evening with a second-period fall at 125 pounds. Teammates James Knight (130 pounds), A.J. Washington (135), Detori Mitchell (145), Brandon Darby (171) and heavyweight Brandon Johnson each collected a fall.

Beddingfield yielded eight forfeits.

Eastern Wayne plays host to the 2nd annual Battle at Little Big Horn on Saturday. The 16-team invitational begins at 9:30 a.m. and admission is $6.

Dustin Smith, Wilson Head and Brad Floars turned in identical eight-point efforts in Faith Christian's 44-28 victory over Mt. Calvary-Hookerton in N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region play Tuesday afternoon.

The Conquerors led 19-4 after one period and 21-11 at halftime.

Faith Christian improved to 7-1 overall.

Brandon Davis pumped in a team-high 16 points in Wayne Country Day's 47-39, non-conference conquest of Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Terence Toran paced Rosewood's offense with a team-high 10 points in a 38-29 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Johnston on Tuesday afternoon.

Joseph Willis chipped in six points for the Eagles.

Jordan Mitchell and Dewayne Richardson led the Panthers with 12 and nine points, respectively.

Rosewood (1-11, 0-2 Carolina) entertains Hobbton today.

Cougars collect

fourth straight win

Demetrio Irby and Quantiago Holloman each posted a double-double in Goldsboro High's 68-58 conquest of county rival Eastern Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.

Irby sizzled the nets for a game-high 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Holloman provided 22 points and 10 rebounds. The duo combined for 10 assists in the absence of point guard Michael Langston, who fell ill and left the game in the opening quarter.

Chris Suggs added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars, who seized their fourth consecutive win and remained unbeaten in 2007.

Goldsboro (5-7) will take a two-week break before playing host to Eastern Wayne on Jan. 23.

Middle schools

Eastern Wayne boys 70, Norwayne 33 -- Jonathan Midgette emerged the top scorer with 16 points, while Lamar Best and Jamal Broadie provided 11 points apiece. Best added five rebounds, five steals and four assists. The Warriors (8-0) entertain Grantham on Thursday.
