Rosewood matmen dominate Bruins, Panthers

KENLY -- First-year starter T.J. Sprinkle led a parade of 10 unbeaten wrestlers as Rosewood dominated a non-conference, tri-meet contested Thursday evening at North Johnston.

The Eagles triumphed in 10 of 11 contested individual bouts and pummeled Wilson Beddingfield 67-3. They seized five of the final six matches against the host Panthers and exited with a 51-21 decision.

"I thought our guys looked pretty good coming out of last week's beating we took up at (Pittsboro) Northwood last Friday," said Rosewood head coach Bill Edmundson. "Every now and then, it's productive to be humbled and the boys came out sharp and focused tonight."

Sprinkle, who wrestled in the 160-pound slot, posted a pair of falls after trailing each opponent. He pinned Beddingfield in 3 minutes, 44 seconds and then stuck the Panthers' Colt Burns in 3:19.

Sprinkle's pin proved crucial in the North Johnston match.

The Eagles' Josh Holmes, who concluded the night 2-0, began the dual with an 11-4 decision over Daniel Munoz. The Panthers answered with falls in two of the next three matches and led 12-9 when Sprinkle took the mat. Sprinkle's victory pushed Rosewood back in front 15-12.

North Johnston grabbed a 15-15 tie when 171-pounder Jacob Lewis upended Vontarius Kornegay 8-2. Rosewood, however, closed out the match with a 36-6 run that included falls from Chris Holmes (189 pounds), heavyweight Trevor Morris, Jim Bish (119), J.D. Baker (125) and Chris Hare (130).

The Eagles' Olivia Neal picked up a forfeit during that stretch.

The Holmes brothers, Hare, Byron Cavenaugh, Morris, Neal, Bish and Baker each ended the night 2-0. Richie Pelt, who wrestled against Beddingfield, fashioned a 1-0 record.

"J.D. continues to get better and better every outing," said Edmundson. "His offseason experiences are paying off big-time now. The Holmes brothers wrestled well, and Josh started us off right in the North Johnston match."

Overall, Rosewood collected 15 falls, two decisions, one major decision and three forfeits in the two dual matches combined. The Eagles return to action Saturday in the Terry Pilkington Memorial at Charles B. Aycock.

Fred Floars tallied a game-high 15 points in Faith Christian's 34-25, non-region victory over Northview on Thursday afternoon.

Eric Powell and Wilson Head registered five points apiece for the Conquerors.

Southern Wayne

cruises past Rose

DUDLEY -- Rishad McCoy led three Southern Wayne players in double figures with 17 points in an 81-64, non-conference victory over J.H. Rose on Wednesday afternoon.

Nick Oats and Chris Davis provided 15 and 10 points, respectively.

The Saints improved to 10-2 overall and face archrival Eastern Wayne today.

Middle schools

Grantham girls 31, Rosewood 16 -- Andrel Morris pumped in 18 points for the Bulldogs, while Taylor Hood provided six points and six rebounds. Angelica Knight led Rosewood's attack with 10 points. Grantham improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II foes. The Bulldogs entertain Dillard on Monday.

Dillard girls 38, Greenwood 33 -- Machiyah Maye and Shakira Campbell led a balanced offensive attack with 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tigers. Shamori Worrell collected a game-high 18 points for Greenwood. Dillard (5-2) is the guest of Grantham next Monday.

Mount Olive boys 64, Spring Creek 24 -- Breyon Johnson and Carlos Council knocked down 18 points apiece for the Trojans. Octaveous Oates added 13 points for Mount Olive, which improved to 6-2 overall and remained perfect in three WCMSAC Division II outings. The Trojans travel to Greenwood next Thursday.
