Mount Olive tries to make it four in a row

The last two times the Mount Olive women's basketball team has played the same team in back-to-back games, the Trojans have swept the series. The Trojans are one win away from making it three consecutive sweeps.

Mount Olive returns to action this evening as the Trojans play host to Saint Augustine's in non-conference women's basketball at Kornegay Arena. Tip-off is 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Mount Olive (4-3) extended its winning streak to three with a 68-60 victory at Saint Augustine's on Dec. 16. Tonight's contest is the Trojans' first game since their come-from-behind win 13 days ago.

Freshman forward Helen Moore matched a career high with 20 points and sophomore guard Brittney Robich scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half as the Trojans used a 23-2 run to turn an 11-point deficit into a double-digit lead.

Moore, who is averaging 14.8 points per game, has recorded five consecutive double-figure performances. She's also third on the team in rebounding and fourth in steals.

Sophomore guard Tomeka Prichard is averaging 11.1 points per game and continues to spark the Trojans from beyond the arc. Prichard has hit at least one three-pointer in 23 of her last 24 games.

In her last three games, junior point guard Keona Corley is averaging 8.3 assists and 7.0 steals per game. Earlier this month, she came within one assist of recording the Trojans' first triple-double in more than a decade with 11 points, 11 steals and nine assists against Limestone.

Sophomore forward Alisa Jones and junior forward Jill Oaks are both averaging more than six rebounds per game. Jones pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds against Limestone, while Oaks established a career best with 10 boards against Chowan.

Robich, who had never reached double figures prior to the first meeting against Saint Augustine's, hit 5-of-6 three-pointers in the game, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the second half. Robich came off the bench to play a career-high 28 minutes in the first meeting.

Saint Augustine's (2-7) has played two games since the first meeting against Mount Olive. The Falcons defeated St. Paul's 68-63 on Dec. 20 and fell to Virginia State 58-48 on Dec. 22.

Mount Olive has allowed an average of 55 points per game during its current winning streak. Saint Augustine's was the only opponent to reach the 60-point mark in the Trojans' last four games.

In each of the last two years, Mount Olive's final regular season opponent was also its first-round opponent in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament. The Trojans posted consecutive wins against Limestone in 2005 and against Lees-McRae in 2006.

Notes: Mount Olive is 5-4 against CIAA opponents during the past four seasons, including a 2-1 mark against Saint Augustine's ... The Trojans have won six of their last seven games during the month of December, dating back to last season ... Mount Olive is assured of going into the new year with at least a .500 record for the third consecutive season ... Tonight's game is the second of three consecutive games for the Trojans against CIAA opponents. Mount Olive plays host to defending CIAA champion Shaw Wednesday.
