Bridgette Briggs triggered the inbounds pass to Yolanda Pitt, who easily dribbled around one Goldsboro defender at midcourt and took an open lane to the basket. Pitt converted the uncontested layup with 4.9 seconds left and lifted the Golden Falcons to a thrilling 62-60 overtime victory.
C.B. Aycock (2-7) claimed its second consecutive win in a three-day span and swept the regular-season series against the Cougars. Goldsboro dropped to 0-6 overall, including an 0-4 worksheet against Wayne County opposition this season.
On the men's side, every Goldsboro player saw action and scored in a 94-46 victory. The Cougars (6-1) extended their winning streak to six games, while the Golden Falcons departed 0-9 overall.
"Goldsboro is always a tough place to play and a completely different atmosphere," said Aycock coach Carrie Reynell. "I told the girls that no matter what the score was the first time we played them, we couldn't take anything for granted.
"It was going to be a completely different game."
It was.
Unlike the double-digit result two days ago, the second meeting turned into a tight-fisted affair. The teams worked through 11 lead changes and seven ties -- all in the second half.
Aycock erased an 11-point first-quarter deficit and seized a 23-21 lead on Jasmine Dobbin's old-fashioned three-point play. Chantel Gaines layup off a turnover and Erin Medford's three-pointer off Dobbin's assist staked the Golden Falcons to a 28-23 halftime lead.
Goldsboro's Danielle Irby, who pumped in a game-high 17 points, knotted the contest at 30-30 with a three-pointer off Victoria Williams' assist midway through the third period. A see-saw battle ensued as the Cougars forged ahead 40-38 after three quarters.
Irby's soft jumper off Zeara McDuffie's assist provided the Cougars with a 42-38 advantage in the fourth. Briggs and Gaines combined for Aycock's next eight points -- all off backdoor plays.
"With an aggressive man-to-man, we knew they (Goldsboro) were going to give up a lot of things," said Reynell. "They didn't have anybody who could match up with our size, so we encouraged our players to pound it inside. Our guards were forcing it a little too much (in the first half).
"We tried to get them to settle down a little bit, get the ball in there and let them go one-on-one (to the basket)."
McDuffie buried a 12-footer in the lane to tie the game at 53-53. Aycock turned the ball over on its next possession, but time ran out on Goldsboro.
The Golden Falcons started overtime with a 5-0 run, but had to hang on. The Cougars pulled within 60-58 and eventually tied the game at 60-60 on single free throws from Kiana Williams and Victoria Williams.
Aycock called timeout with 9.0 seconds to go.
"We went over the spread (offense) again, made sure everyone knew their positions," said Reynell.
Briggs and Pitt did the rest.
Sixth-year Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan, before his team exited the locker room to take the floor, reminded the players that Aycock was one team on the schedule that worried him the most.
"We talked tonight about focusing and putting the game out of reach in the first half," said Jordan. "I think we did that."
C.B. Aycock helped a little bit.
The Golden Falcons misfired on their first 10 possessions in the opening quarter and didn't register a point until Alex Peacock drained a pair of free throws with 4:48 remaining.
Goldsboro led 23-7 after one quarter and 46-15 at halftime.
"The first half, we totally lost our composure," said Aycock coach David West. "The second half, we got it back to a certain degree. We were able to settle down, run our offense some.
"We got a few more rebounds and played a lot better."
Eleven Goldsboro players either recorded a basket or free throw in the opening 16 minutes of action. Eric McLean dished out five assists and finished with eight for the game. Overall, the Cougars handed out a season-high 20 assists as a team on 38 made field goals.
Jordan stressed fundamentals and execution in the second half. The Cougars employed their halfcourt man-to-man and 2-3 zone defenses, and worked on their ball and help-deny principles.
"We used the second half as a learning tool to get our younger guys a lot of minutes that will hopefully pay dividends down the road," said Jordan. "I said the other day our basketball skills didn't win (the Eastern Wayne game), our talent did.
"Tonight, our skills won the game for us."
McLean led four players in double figures with 13 points. Kevonta McDuffie chipped in 12. Tim Hobbs tallied 11, while Tim Kornegay contributed 10.
Peacock paced the Golden Falcons with 12 points. Jacob Pendleton added eight.
