Warrior grapplers pummel South Lenoir

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Eastern Wayne triumphed in 10 of 12 contested matches and seized 13 individual victories overall in a 75-6, non-conference thrashing of South Lenoir at Spring Creek.

The Warriors remained unbeaten in two dual-team outings and return to action Saturday in the 11th annual Eagle Invitational at Rosewood.

Freshman 103-pounder Drew Tesar started the night with a 49-second pin against the Blue Devils' Zack Sutton. Teammate Jordan Harris followed with a first-period fall, while Corbin Harris (119) and Grant Nix (125) each drew a forfeit.

Eastern Wayne's next three matches lasted a combined 117 seconds. James Knight stuck South Lenoir's David Turner in 44 seconds, while A.J. Washington needed just 18 ticks of the clock to pin Daniel Parker. Detori Mitchell provided a 55-second fall over Justin Grady.

T.J. Highsmith (145) kept the shutout going with a second-period fall against Tyler Turlington. Brian Lincoln (152), Jared Humphrey (160) and Brandon Darby (171) each picked up an individual win.

South Lenoir avoided the shutout with a pin at 189.

Brandon Johnson and Foy Coley wrapped up the Warriors' victory with back-to-back second-period falls.

Spring Creek

remains unbeaten

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek continued its best start in school history with a 48-36, non-conference victory over South Lenoir on Tuesday evening.

The Gators improved to 4-0 and wrestle again Saturday in the 11th annual Eagle Invitational at Rosewood.

Daniel Richter, Neil O'Hara, Paul Richter, Daquan Wright, Ross Montifia and heavyweight Dwight Strickland each won by fall. Matt Richter and Trey Mills each received a forfeit.

"Right now, it's full steam ahead," said Gators coach Dwight Glenn.

completes sweep

Nick Woods drained four consecutive free throws in the final minute and Wayne Christian completed its regular-season sweep with a 45-40 victory over county archrival Wayne Country Day.

"It was an exciting game with a lot of lead changes," said Wayne Christian head coach Tim Brannan. "I thought the guys played an excellent game tonight."

Wayne Country Day led 24-17 in the second quarter when the Eagles erupted with a 9-0 run. T.A. Brannan, Eric Williams and Shea Glasman provided the offense during that stretch, which eventually gave Wayne Christian a 26-24 lead at halftime.

The Eagles kept either a one- or two-possession lead until the Chargers forged ahead 40-39 in the fourth quarter. Floronta Wynn, who led all scorers with 18 points, and Lamar Carpenter each buried a three-pointer.

T.A. Brannan provided two free throws to put Wayne Christian back in front 41-40 with 1:10 remaining in regulation. Wayne Country Day failed to convert its next possession and Woods began his game-clinching effort at the free throw line.

Wayne Christian sank 9 of 10 free throws in the final quarter.

Williams led the Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds. Glasman contributed 13 points, while T.A. Brannan provided 10 points and nine rebounds.

Carpenter added nine points for the Chargers.

Wayne Christian (3-4) travels to Johnston Christian on Friday, while Wayne Country Day is the guest of Ahoskie Ridgecroft today.

Vikings defeat

Aycock at home

TARBORO -- Tarboro High pulled away in the third quarter and turned back Charles B. Aycock 78-61 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

The Vikings outscored the Golden Falcons 25-14 after halftime and kept their double-digit advantage the remainder of the game.

Jonathan Williams paced Aycock with 12 points, while Qwantay Poole contributed 10.

The Golden Falcons (0-7) entertain Goldsboro today.

Goldsboro eases

past E. Wayne

Demarcus Moye pumped in a team-high 11 points as Goldsboro defeated Eastern Wayne 51-43 on Tuesday afternoon.

Jakkar Pettaway added 10 points for the Cougars, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Hassan Best emerged the Warriors' top scorer with 12 points.

Union knocks

off Rosewood

Zack Mangum led Rosewood with 15 points in a 54-48, non-conference loss against Union on Tuesday.

Terence Toran and Will Beasley supplied eight and seven points, respectively, for the Eagles.

Rosewood (0-2) travels to Midway on Friday.

Tarboro cruises

past C.B. Aycock

TARBORO -- Kyle LaFlamme led a balanced offensive attack in C.B. Aycock's 70-55, non-conference loss at Tarboro High on Tuesday afternoon.

Antwan Hagins, Dominique Young and Anderson Barnes each provided eight points for the Golden Falcons.

Aycock (0-7) entertains Goldsboro today.

defeats WCDS

Stone Stewart paced Wayne Country Day with eight points in a non-conference, 37-28 loss at county archrival Wayne Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Brandon Davis, who sustained an eye injury, did not play the second half and finished with five points. Davis had emerged the Chargers' top scorer in their previous three outings.

Justin Braithwaite led three Eagles in double figures with 11 points. Adam Combs and John Thomas Norris each contributed 10 points.

WCDS (3-1) visits Ahoskie Ridgecroft today, while Wayne Christian (4-2) is the guest of Northwood Temple on Dec. 15.

Warriors still

Tiara McIntyre collected a team-high 11 points and unbeaten Eastern Wayne knocked off county rival Goldsboro High 49-30 on Tuesday afternoon.

Katie Maye and Jalisa Moore each added eight points for the Warriors, who remained perfect in three outings.

Laquita Holmes and Laquita Campbell provided 12 and eight points, respectively, for the Cougars. Goldsboro fell to 0-3 overall.

Wayne Christian nearly let a double-digit advantage slip away, but managed to escape with a 29-27, non-conference victory over county archrival Wayne Country Day on Tuesday evening.

Jennifer Price paced the Eagles, who built a 13-point lead through three quarters, with 11 points. Hanna Kaler added 10, while Charlie Ipock chipped in five.

Catherine Ford collected nine points for the Chargers, who fell to 1-2 overall. Jessica Lewis contributed six points, seven rebounds and one steal.

Wayne Christian (3-2) visits Johnston Christian on Friday.

Tarboro knocks

off C.B. Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Caroline Schlaeppi poured in 10 points as C.B. Aycock dropped a 32-24 decision against Tarboro High on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (1-4) travel to Goldsboro today.

Middle schools

Wayne Christian boys 31, Wayne Country Day 25 -- Unbeaten Wayne Christian (4-0) swept the regular-season series against its county archrival. Russell Turner and Hil Tanner paced the Chargers with 10 and eight points, respectively. WCDS fell to 1-2 overall and plays host to St. Mary's on Thursday.

Wayne Christian boys 35, St. Mary's 18 -- Chase King notched his third double-double -- 13 points, 14 rebounds -- of the season. Chase Darden contributed 11 points for the Eagles.
