Hawks offense balanced in non-conference win over C.B. Aycock

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Marquez Powell led a balanced offensive attack with 12 points in the Hawks' 65-37, non-conference victory over Charles B. Aycock at Wooten Gymnasium.

Parris Lee complemented Powell with a 10-point effort. Teammates Dusty Davis and Joe Whitfield provided eight points apiece.

Qwantay Poole paced C.B. Aycock with 11 points. Jordan Yawn chipped in eight, while Jacob Pendleton collected six points.

The Hawks led 17-7 after one quarter and 35-22 at halftime.

C.B. Aycock, which dropped to 0-6 overall, is the guest of Tarboro High next Tuesday. North Lenoir is scheduled to play host to West Craven.

Cape Fear escapes in OT

State-ranked Cape Fear Christian avoided the upset bug and turned back Wayne Christian 57-53 in overtime on Friday evening at Clifford Gymnatorium.

It was the Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference opener for both teams.

Laquam McCoy emerged Cape Fear's top scorer with 20 points.

T.A. Brannan led Wayne Christian with a double-double -- 23 points, 12 rebounds. Shea Glasman and Eric Williams each contributed 11 points.

The Eagles (2-4, 0-1 CCC) led by one point at halftime and 34-32 after three quarters of play. The game was tied at 46-46 after regulation.

Wayne Christian travels to archrival Wayne Country Day on Tuesday.

Union rolls over Princeton

PRINCETON -- Daniel Gerrell delivered a double-double in Princeton's 82-57, non-conference loss against Union on Friday evening.

Gerrell finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who fell to 4-2 overall. Ryan Daughtry and Josh Barefoot provided 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Terry Adams paced the Spartans with 21 points.

Princeton is the guest of Hobbton on Wednesday.

Girls

W. Christian falls to Cape Fear

Brittany Sullivan poured in a team-high 12 points as Wayne Christian suffered a 69-21 loss against Cape Fear Christian in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opener for both teams.

Jennifer Price and Brooke Norris provided six and three points, respectively.

Wayne Christian (2-3, 0-1 CCC) return to action Dec. 15 against CCC member Neuse Baptist.

JV girls

Eagles claim CCC opener

Hanna Kaler and Kayla Kennedy emerged Wayne Christian's leading scorers in a 40-30, Carolina Christian 1-A Conference win over Cape Fear Christian on Friday.

Kaler pumped in 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Eagles, who evened their record at 2-2 overall. Kennedy contributed nine points.

Charlie Ipock chipped in six points and three rebounds. Jennifer Price added five points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

Wayne Christian is the guest of Wayne Country Day on Tuesday.

Golf

Walnut Creek Ladies Assoc.

Josie Ottaviani won the play of the day during weekly tournament play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Kathy Woodard claimed low gross and Faye Franklin took low net. Mary Ann Sutton won low putts.

Middle schools

Mount Olive boys d. Greenwood 47-28 -- Carlos Council poured in a game-high 19 points, while Cody Davis contributed 11. Breyon Johnson chipped in six points. It was the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II opener for both teams. The Trojans (1-0, 1-0 Division II) travel to Norwayne on Monday, while Greenwood plays host to Grantham.

Eastern Wayne boys d. Grantham 59-25 -- Jonatham Midgette and Jamal Broadie scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Warriors. Eastern Wayne (1-0) entertains Spring Creek next Monday.

Wayne Christian 37, Cape Fear Christian 35 -- Chase King posted a double-double -- 11 points, 20 rebounds -- in the Eagles' Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opener. Chase Darden tallied a game-high 13 points. Wayne Christian (2-0) plays host to St. Mary's on Monday.
